I replace the old ply ones on my boat this year with 12mm acrylic sheet in black from Trent plastics (I think). They look professional but let no light through.
I suspect it would be very hard to break through them. The sheet can be cut with hand tools and a router. Mine are in two pieces with a angle between them to shed water but they are quite heavy, I have made a bag to store them when not in use to avoid them getting scratched.
