The yard pulled our mast this week and commented that the wand (if that’s the right term) has a thread on it for mounting but it actually just pushes onto the plug and is held in place with a stainless clip. Is this OK? The wand (unknown brand) was clearly designed to mount through a hole with some sort of nut on the back.

Edit - it looks a bit like this one but I think the mounting is different: 213 Wind Sensor | B&G Sailing Electronics

The plug has been covered in tape in the pics, so in the 2nd one the wand isn’t fully home.

How long has it been mounted like that? If, as I suspect, its quite a while then why change it? If it ain’t broke, etc.
To my uneducated eye that looks like a purpose made clip. For peace of mind you could add a cable tie.

A number of years I suspect. We've had the boat 2 years but this is the first time we've had the mast down. I'm sure you're right, was just curious.

It's a B&G unit but no model numbers on it, just a serial number which doesn't yield anything useful.

If that's the 213, then you're missing a part.
The threaded part on the bottom should screw into a back piece.

You can probably just a find a nut of the correct thread and that would do the same.

Problem with B&G arms - you cannot dissamble ... you can only service the sensor end. I know too well ... I have a 283 with just a pin missing ... you would think that would be a simple fix ? Impossible !!

If its old .. its likely a 213 .... plenty of them on eBay if you want to replace ... but be prepared for the price !!

The bracket would need to change as well. As it stands it's located on the plug (which is mounted in the bracket) with the end of the thread in contact with bracket. It would need the bracket to have a bigger hole for the thread to go through, and then the plug mounting would need to be different. I think someone has adapted a different bracket to take this unit, but not particularly well.

... a bit later. This is what the 178-OB-001 bracket looks like (pinched from an EBay ad):

It has a male thread, as does my wand (see 2nd pic in my original post). So from that I'd say my wand isn't a 213 - or if it is it's been modified. I can't find any mention of legacy B&G wands with the same end fitting as I have. Hey ho, I guess it'll just go back together as it is.

Yeah, as you say, possibly modified then.

On later models (best pic I have sorry).

That metal part is used to provide strain relief for the cable.
The actual wand clicks into a mounting foot set on the masthead.
