Master 200 GT

RYA Yacht Master Certificates will be commercially endorsed if your STCW95 certificates and ENG1 Medical Certificate are sent to the RYA for approval.

If you already have Yachtmaster Offshore you would be better off working towards your Yachtmaster Ocean and then Officer of the Watch (OOW) having gained sea time... assuming you are looking to progress in the industry.

1) Already am commercially endorsed, but RYA tickets do NOT show STCW95, which many countries insist on (will not accept stand alone STCW95 certs, must be on a cert of competance).
2) Already am YMO & have been for many years.
3) Have been "in the industry" for more years than I want to remember, so have "gained sea time..." galore.

What I wanted, was feedback regarding any benefits anyone could give regarding any improvement in their opportunities having got a Master 200 ticket.

Can I ask what the largest vessel (in tonnage and length) is that you have worked on as Captain or First Mate and how much sea time you have logged on a vessel over 15m in the last 10 years, as this will help me give you my opinion on your question

Largest vessel LOA 45m
Heaviest Tonnage 185 GRT

As Master - these are not 'yachts'.

In my experience, there are very few authorities that will not accept the YM in fact I have never struggled with it. However you can have your YM Offshore and/or Ocean endorsed with the words STCW'95 blah blah if you hold STCW'95 Basic Safety (4 courses). I have been told (and this is hearsay) that Luxembourg will not recognise the non STCW ’95 tickets; however we have never even quoted for a job on a Lux flagged vessel far less had to satisfy any requirements

Does not matter with regards to the suggestion above, you could take master 200 now (subject to ENG1, Medical Care/First Aid, GOC/ROC and basic safety) however if you want to get involved with bigger boats then OOW is the ticket to go for, sea time for the tickets after that only starts counting once you have the OOW ticket, you can not count sea time already logged. Might not seam fair but that is the rules

If you have full time work as a freelance YM then it can’t improve amount of work only fees. The 200 ticket route is a bit of a dead end; our team relief skipper some pretty big yacht (measured in m not feet) and have never been asked for the Master 200.

Have just got this confirmed by RYA thanks.

Master 200 route considered, because of a recent problem I had with officialdom in Norway (survey vessel). Also, many companies operating commercial (non-yachty) vessels in UK require this.

The Master 200, also seems to allow 24m+, as long as up to 200grt (coded) or 500grt (yachts).

"our team relief skipper some pretty big yacht (measured in m not feet) and have never been asked for the Master 200."

Have they got Master 200 though?

No all Offshore and Oceans with STCW' 95 endorsement, the certifcate say 200 tonne so owners insurerers are happy.

Im not saying the M200 is worthless but we have never needed it.

It's also a deadend as a certification route (i.e. you can't then jump to Master 500).

Alant,

I took my Class IV when the MCA code for large yachts first appeared, initially because I would have lost my job of 15 years if I hadn't, although I felt resentful of both the time and money I had to invest, once I started the process I learned a great deal, I returned to the med a far greater seaman than when I left. I no longer use that qualification or work in the luxury yacht market but IMHO take the qualification because you want to learn rather than purely to get a better paid job. As for the Norway incident it doesn't matter what paperwork you have for your vessel crew or yourself you will always have local problems - that's life!

This is different level to M 200 though, isn't it.

Learning I have no probs with, if it improves capability.

However, want to make sure I'm not 'wasting' resources going directly to M 200. On this thread, getting conflicting reports.

Yes we know, hence the big red text that sais "This site is under development."

This is far from ideal. Our website design company have had problmes and the whole job has dragged on far longer than it should ever have. The pages you are after are all written but I belive its the online shop feature that is not integrated
