Port saint louis ive no idea at all what it costs to store but it used to cost ffr1000 (£100) to take it up or down the the same to store it in their workshop in the roof per month.
You will find yards as you pass through France but i suppose its better to leave it at one end or the other?
Unless you intend staying in the canal system, then it could pay to leave your mast at one of the yards in the center/burgundy/soan as the storage will be far less and if outside almost free. The up down cost around 75euros that is craneing it off or on the boat!!!
You could try rental bases but they normally only think of money and art interested in servising private boats
There are "boat yards" well inland amazingly, run(owned) by British!!!!!
you should potter around the canal system its sunny walm/hot and still open! but perhaps next season just potter of with the mast untill you find a yard you agree with
OH your comeing from Spain? then no problem Sete ag mort area and ag mort you can do a deal to leave your mast for around 100euros a month undercover--not always inside but under a roof, Since the euro everything is in multipals of 100!! not saddy Francs /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif If you were coming down port saint lois is the easyest but i think that yard maybe closed closing??
You will have to arrive and ask but Sete or best ag mort you will find a good solution if not for the rhone!! Time that river was abolished!! In these days were europe forbids anything remotly problamatic its time the rhone had its tap turned down!!
Contact some French boat haulage companies - I get the impression they will store the mast at their facility and then deliver it to you when - where you arrive- if not they will know who will store it as lots of French yachts do this..
Hello again Mike,
Are you changing operating areas? Surely your mast is not too long, anyway in situ it will be useful for awnings/storage covers etc.
Remember old Max he told me his mast was put in storage somewhere near Port St Louis problem was yard went bust and he ended up having to buy it back.
How deep is your keel? Anything over 1.4 metres and you have to pick your canals with care. Canal du Midi / Canal lateral a la Garonne often have shallow stretches in the summer months, suspect same applies elsewhere too.
the depth is given for each canal-its possiable to use a yacht with1.8meters travelling is not always a problem but parking can be! i run aground often even with 1.3m then kedge off and feel the way in to the parking!! Keeps you fit!
Some canals have closed and others will soon so be aware and plan your trip you will enjoy it!!Even with your mast on deck-
buying back your mast is very in at the moment as yards faced with taxes and charges plus huge costs to comply with EEC rules go broke!!
If that happens you can normally apply to get it back showing your proper recipt inc tax fully paidin France you will get your mast back without extra charge in UK or Germany the yard will keep it to pay debts!!!!
"" ...........often have shallow stretches in the summer months, suspect same applies elsewhere too.""
Not so, as Trouville says. Aside from the Canal du Midi, the others are maintained at, or very close to, 1.8 metres, so no problem for the average bateaux voile.
Mooring can be difficult though as the peniches plough (almost literally) down the middle of the canals and the sides tend to be shallower as a result. We carried a 'ship's plank', that allowed us to bridge the gap twixt boat and bank on the many ocassions we couldn't get alongside.
We carried our mast with us and had no problems whatsoever, but that probably wouldn't be sensible for a two year period in the canals.
Beautiful way to travel through the country though.
Hi,
Surely your cat doesnt draw 1.4/1.8m, how is your engine performing? have you had the change yet? If you head north hope to meet up again brgds.
