mast removal for the clyde

do you think that the need to judge the tide so carefully on teh river Carron has had an influence on the canal usage?

Certainly its affected my thoughts. I have a fixed doghouse on my HR rasmus and its not coming off to transit the canal

Give it a try??

It's not as easy as that. You have to go under the bridge when the tide is just high enough to be just off the bottom and hope that you have calculated your air draft correctly to clear under the bridge. Also when doing the calculations remember it is fresh water in the canal so the boat's draft will be greater.

There is just short of 5m between the bottom of the river to the bottom of the Kerse bridge. So as Strathglass says - aim for just enough water below the keel. If you are going west to east, the BW staff at Carron are excellent (as the are all the way through in my book) and get you ready and tell you exactly when to go.

On my own boat the air draft plus the underwater draft is just on the limit for passing through. I would not consider taking it through that canal. So have to go up to Inverness to get to the west coast.

I brought my old boat through the F&C when I bought her, but went through the caly to get back to the west. The new owner brought her back through the F&C 2 weeks ago. I know your boat and I reckon we had the same draft (6ft) but more air draft than you. So I think it definately is possible for you to get through, but going up/down the Carron will not go down as one of the more relaxing afternoons you spend on your boat.
