I fitted an inexpensive replacement that takes standard festoon bulbs and Halogen for the deck light. Working on the theory that the need for lower power is less for a motoring light and deck floods tend to be used only for short times. You could fit an LED festoon is you wished, I have found the cheap ones very reliable.

The second factor is that if/when purpose built arrays fail you still have to go up the mast but are faced with the much worse job of replacing the whole unit. In theory they will glow forever, in practice you seem to be lucky to get 5 years. I wish I had followed my own advice with the masthead light, I will be looking forward to the third trip up the mast when the weather get milder.

Just sayin'....

Someone should be going up the mast to inspect every year.

The new LED lights seem to last a long time; they are sealed, so no way for water to get in. There are two problems with replacement LED bulbs:
  1. The fitting must be openable, which means moisture and corrosion of the bulb socket/fittings.
  2. Lights are ONLY aproved if tested with the same exact lamp used during testing. I seen numerous cases where the location of the replacment bulb relative to the lens is slightly different, resulting in incorrect focus and low light output. It is all about the lens. At the very least, observe it from a distance of at least 500 meters at night and compare brightness to other nav lights.
