Mast climbing

I need to go up the mast to install a new VHF antenna.

Is anyone at the marina likely to get upset??

I'm at Port Solent currently afloat.

I'm at Brighton Premier, I've been up the mast as have many others, I'm not aware of Premier not liking (whatever that means) you to work on your own boat whether afloat or in their yard...

That's good to know..I'm sure I read somewhere that work on boats is prohibited...maybe I'm imagining it.

I think there is something about external contractors but you're fine to work on your own boat...

Im sure they sent out an email to berth holders not long ago about no mast climbing whilst boat on the hard (I could be wrong). Been up my mast a few times (in water) and nobody said a word other than a few boat owners asked if I could nip up theirs!

I actually rent a berth within the marina but not from Premier itself. Premier being a commercial enterprise I wondered if some activities such as mast climbing by private individuals might be banned under some sort of health and safety code.

However thanks for your helpful response.

Allows ascent and controlled descent on a single static line leaving a second for safety onto which I can place a prusik.

This is fine for the main mast but slightly problematic with the mizzen as there is only a single halyard plus a skinny topping lift which doesn't run over the top and I don't trust the sheave....as such the safety line will be run from the main mast and I guess if the main gear fails I'll be swinging over to the main mast with a whack.

I should say I also have a dedicated new 10mm line that I run through in place of the halyard....rather than rely on a UV/salt battered bit of rope that's been up there for months.

TWO ropes please ..... seriously .. one to do the job - tended by reliable person . and a second as a back-up to your safety harness ... That halyard could be that second ...

Not sure I could cope with that! But, importantly, no (visible) safety harness which I believe should take your back-up line. What if the chair fails or (with such a basic one) you fall out?

I use a chest harness with a front attachment to the grigri. This can also be used to attach the safety line thus giving redundancy.
