Mast Climbing.

You will find that you can help the wincher below by 'climbing' the mast with your feet and hands.

Doing that reduces your weight on the line whilst those below winch in the halyard.

Other good methods already mentioned, I use a ladder and the spinni halliard is kept tigh as a safety line.

I went up my mast on Saturday and was nervous having read this.

I used a bosuns chair, I tied the main halyard on myself so I was happy with that.

I had a mate winching and someone else tailing the winch. I climbed up as much as I could and kept checking that things were OK below. I soon found that I had to pull myself up and wait for the winch to be taken up before pulling again. I did hug the top of the mast fairly tightly untill the halyard was cleated off.

Coming down was easier and I was glad to get down but I'll be happy to do it again if I need to.

The real answer is steps up the mast. Whilst I would not say going up is fun it is quick and easy, and Mrs Maxi only has to back up the safety line rather than try and winch me. Jobs that would have to wait ttill we had some one to help get done straight away, which usually means they are easier.
