Mast Climbing - single handed

I use a Defflee mast ladder, with sail sliders on one side to suit my mast and different slides on the other side for my friends boat. Haul up on the main halliard, tie off at the base and you just climb up - easy peasy - with a harness of course to the topping lift and a safety line around the mast.

With a spare rope you could just abseil down, far easier than reverse jumaring
+1

abseil down on a separate line using a figure of eight, on the way up take up the slack on this and tie it off every few feet and this acts as a safety.

to drop down take off one jumar, and bring the other down with your thumb on the trigger ready to stop your decent if you lose control of the abseil.

I have done this several times it is easy and very safe, no matter what goes wrong you have two means of getting down unaided.

I have a Get Up Mast Ladder from Hurst Marine that I've never used as I have easy access to a cherry picker. It's in "as new" condition and, if anyone is interested, it's for sale at £75 +P&P. It has webbing Velcro straps to go around the mast and it's about 12 metres long (I'll measure it properly if anyone's interested).

Does your cherry picker sail with you?

I've been using a Grigri and ascender (with footstraps) for years now. I've done it at sea too. It is very secure, comfortable and much easier than having someone grind my bulk up. So I even do it at the dock when others offer to help. I was up replacing the wind vane just last Sunday. I wrote about this in my singlehanded tips book.
