mast cleaning

any idears how to clean up smoke damage to a ally mast ,ive cleaned the worst of with a green scouring pad but it still needs more cleaning (mast is off boat)

a green scouring pad is the equivelant of sanding with 400 grit sand paper. sanding with 240g or 180g wet and dry may be more aggresive but do a test patch and check for scratch marks. There may also be a chemical cleaner or detergent that should work to rather than using an abrasive method.
