In an attempt to improve the children's yachting experience this season I am planning a trip to the Mary Rose Museum. Is visiting by yacht (2m draught) even feasible? Which marina would offer the best experience to visit ? I assume a short walk but maybe a ferry across Portsmouth Harbour? Anchoring and dinghy trip maybe pushing it! I suspect the Museum would be a whole day experience so probably 2 night overstay.

Thanks

Gunwharf is pretty unbearable for waves as it's the wrong side and has no protection from ferries. Premier Gosport is nice, but can be challenging in some tides and is still rolly. Haslar is a good option, still a bit rolly but bearable if you tie up well. By the time you visit the lightship should reopen which kids will love for a meal out as it's on a ship. Hopefully the facilities will all reopen and/or be fixed by then too, we're currently down to one shower block out of three. Gosport side you also have the submarine museum, explosion museum and dive museum for amusement.
Gosport ferry is every 15 mins, regular as clockwork, and takes 5 mins to get accross, it's also pretty reasonably priced.
If you like great food also check out restaurant 27 (will eventually get a michellin star when their service catches up to the food) and Forty6 (still excellent food by comparatively cheap).

You can get an all-in-one ticket to all of the Portsmouth attractions (Victory, Mary Rose, Explosion, Submarine museuem, Actions Stations (I think thats all of them)). There is then a museum ferry from the dockyard to the Submarine museum oin Gosport which is within walking distance of Haslar Marina.

Thanks for mentioning this, we've been trying to work out what that ferry was for as we sit in Haslar and see it all the time!

Gunwharf Quay is exposed to winds from the SW but in the right conditions would be my preference for a family visit to Mary Rose. Depending upon your time and inclination, taking the ferry to Gosport is an option if you also wanted to include the Submarine Museum.

Not wanting to teach you to suck eggs, please check QHM regs when using the Small Boat Channel and when crossing to/from Ballast / Camber.

The Mary Rose is one of those attractions that are not only worth seeing but worth going to see. Since I first saw it in the early days the exhibition has been greatly enlarged and the balance between the show for serious-minded viewers and the needs of children is a model of how it should be done. I would give Portsmouth a couple of days at least if you want to include the Warrior, the Spinnaker Tower and the rest.

thanks all really useful information. Looks like the kids wont have to endure any of that sailing stuff with all the attractions on offer!

Or just wait until you're there and make friends with the harbour wombles :D (don't forget the engine in the entrance too!)

I went into Gunwarf for a quick look but assumed it would be noisy overnight with all the restaurants, etc, so decided against staying there.

Is it not that bad?

That noise will stop before midnight. The ferries and their car alarms are your main worry for a good night sleep, along with the wash coming in and violently shaking you awake :D
It's a great location for a night though

You're not selling it :LOL:

Consider also Royal Clarence Marina
A little further to walk to the ferry but very sheltered

Never had a problem at Haslar...
Also, no need to book they will aways fit you in.
Also chip shop opposite the ferry is pretty good and the pub to the right of the ferry (with your back to harbour) is cheap and cheerful.

Most of the rest of that end of Gosport is not great... I'm allowed to say that as I grew up there! :)

Haslar were closed to visitors last summer for dredging - hopefully open this summer as that had a knock-on effect.

Haslar is good for the Dockyard, as is Gunwharf. Camber is also decent, but it's an old school harbour with a 20 foot climb up the quay wall at low tide.

As a Haslar boat for many years some thoughts:-
Plenty of supermarkets in Morrison’s,Aldi ,Asda and even Waitrose in alverstoke;
Restaurants limited but at Christmas we had a good meal at royal Clarence marina restaurant -it’s a sports bar as well and the Haslar marina staff went there for their Xmas party;
The castle tavern by entrance to Gosport marina is fine -there also was a boathouse restaurant in Gosport marina;
You can try Pebbles on beach if you can get a table;
A Thai restaurant plus an Italian towards Waitrose ok;
Avoid Great Wall of china opposite green ferry jetty;
In gunwharf many eateries but blanc brasserie or maybe loch fine if still open however tapas places fine;
If you find way to camber dock the pub there is fine plus a fresh fish market;
Often at Haslar they put visitors into berths of residents who are away-any berth below G is less rolly, g/h and c pontoons have better fairways. Facilities on G pontoon due to be refurbed by end of March . Standard visitors berths alongside green lightship which has facilities and might have a restaurant back one day hopefully. Also building a new restaurant in location of old marina office -jus waiting to see if food up to scratch but it cannot be worse than Portland marina where restaurant food is very ordinary.
