Marking up your anchor chain

Well, we added the inserts in addition to cable ties. By comparison the inserts are almost invisible in use. If the chain happens to come out of the windlass with the links vertical the inserts are almost totally hidden. Even when they are right side up they are nowhere near as easy to identify. I guess if we used a snooker ball method with half a dozen of a specific colour in one location they might be better but we only use red and yellow.

We will definitely stick with cable ties.

I too have added the Osculati inserts. I still have cable ties. | did find one insert in the anchor locker the other day.

I would agree with Vyv that its hard to see how many you have in the chain. In comparison, cable ties left long are easily seen. The only advantage that I can see with the inserts is that when a cable tie comes off - as they do with time - you know from the inserts what length is meant to be marked and so how many cable ties are missing.

fwiw, I put my markers by full packets, they may be around 10 in each blister: one full packet of blue ones at 10m, one full packet green at 20m, etc. Blue Green Red Yellow sort of alphabetic order, sometimes a problem as people from different nationalities come aboard :d
I recently cut and shortened the chain so had to reposition them, a little washing and they were back to their former colours.

Cable ties , bog standard black. Short cut equals 5m , bit longer 10m . Simples , just replaced odd one after 3-4 yrs and plenty of anchoring. Paint on previous chain had knackered the galv.
