I want to put some clearly marked sheath on some rope so that there is no doubt when it has been winched in as far as it should. In other words a clear marker, that stands out as well as it can even in dim light. I know I could wip the rope but that would be a bit long and laborious to give the rope a reasonable length of marker. I have thought about some cable shrink wrap - I know it would eventually split, but I am guessing it would stay on for some while and would stand out very well. It is also easy to do. The rope does have to go around a large power winch. Any other ideas?

Whipping. Get started.

Paint.

A small length of technora cover, it is blackish (stands out at night) and lasts more than the rope.
Except if you have black ropes :)

edit
thinking about it, if whipping is too cumbersome, don't try (proper) rope covering

I'm with Rupert, its nice to concur,, and use, permanent, marker pen which I periodically renew.

I've never tried it - amalgamating tape?

Instead of whipping - sew through wrap round a few turns, sew through.
