Mariposa & water ingress

Whether it is acceptable is a personal decision; do you want to keep heading down to the boat on a regular basis? I would expect it to tighten up a little more yet, but you'll probably still get some ingress. A lot of boats are making a lot more than a quart a day. I'm sure. An electric pump, float switch and battery will enable you to go and do something else. If you have to take the battery home to recharge it, make sure that the pump is using a battery that's not required for something else as well, because it will be pretty flat by the time you get back to it.
If it suits you to haul her out again, let her fill as much as you are game to before you do. Then look for where the water is coming out, because that will be where it is going in. I'd wait until she has been in a month before making that decision, though.
Peter.

I think she will probablt take up some more. Give her a month, and if there is no improvement do as Peter Duck suggests, as you will have a specific problem, such as a loose stopwater.

This is so simple that people overlook it - get the bilges really, really, dry, with a bucket, sponge and kitchen cloth, and look to see where the water is coming in from.

Today I launched clinker built Kala Sona and I am pleased to say that all pumps are working well and enthusiastically! One suggestion I have had for stopping water ingress is to burst a bag of fine sawdust under the boat which will enter the gaps and seal them. I have seen it done once and it seemed to work.

I always have a little water seepage into my boat but nothing to worry about so long as I keep the battery well charged and ensure that the automatic bilge pump is working.

My carvel built boat usually takes 3-4 weeks before she is properly 'tight' and even then we're not talking dust in the bilges. However, after that I can leave her for a week at a time without the float switch on the electric pump activating. That's good enough for me.

As far as the sawdust trick goes, yes, its very effective. The only problem I have found with it is that the sawdust can wash out when the boat is sailed, which means you have to do it again every time you moor/berth. When I needed to recourse to this, I found that there was one bad seam in which the cotton had rotted. Replaced this and all was well.

Re: Mariposa & water ingress

Thanks everyone for the encouraging replies to my post.
Mariposa's been in the water for just over a week now and has been sailed almost every day. She makes a bit of water under sail, but even that situation is improving every time I take her out. Left on her berth for 24 hrs and she's fine; couple of strokes of the pump and it's sucking air.
All-in-all I'm pretty happy with the way things are going.
Let's see what month will do.
