It will cost me £80 + parts to have my Mariner outboard 5 HP serviced. This year I have decided to do it myself, as most of it seems fairly straight forwarded. One problem, has anyone any experience of replacing the impeller in the water pump?
Do you need any special tool etc?

Regards

John

Hi John,
No you will not need any special tools.
The mariner 4/5 are basically the same engine and the procedure is the same.
You will need a 1/4 drive socket set with an 8mm and 10mm socket, 10mm spanner, pair of screw drivers, grease and a 8mm spanner/socket.
Also a good torch.
put engine on a good stand. Remove spark plug.
Remove the round rubber bung on one side of the lower leg. Inside you will see a pair of 10mm socket size bolt heads securing a clamp that is round the gear selector rod.
Make a note by scratching the rods where there positions are. this will help later to re-align there positions.
Unscrew the two bolts but only just loose. Dont remove completely or allow the clamp to fall of the gear selector rod.
Now remove the prop.
Just above the prop you will see a 10mm socket sized bolt under the cavatation plate and one to the rear on the same level.
Remove these two bolts.
Gently pull the lower leg downwards and it should come down and away from the rest of the leg with the drive shaft and a bit of the gear selector rod sticking out.
Put this in a vice or similar and you will see the water pump housing around the bottom of the drive shaft.
remove the three or four bolts that hold the pump housing to the lower leg.
Gently prize up the pump housing and lift up and of the drive shaft.
You will now see the impellor.
If the impellor came of with the pump make sure that the little key that holds the impellor to the drive shaft is there.
Clean of the drive shaft and run some grease up the shaft.
Using the two screwdrivers gently lift the impellor up and of the driveshaft.
Make sure you get the little peg or key that holds the impellor to the shaft.
Re-fit the new impellor in reverse procedure of what you have done.
Make sure twice that you have got the little peg or key in the right way and that it is securing the impellor to the shaft.
Also grease the new impellor blades.
Gently re-fit the impellor housing over the new impellor pushing gently down with the housing whilst turning the shaft and impellor so that the blades are not trapped and slide smoothly into the housing.
Using the torch look up the leg on the outboard and see where the water pump pick up tube is. Also note the flapping upper gear rod and where the drive shaft to power head hole is.
Gently guide the lower leg into the upper housing making sure to line up the drive shaft, Water pump pick up tube and gear selecter rod.
This seems a lot to do at once but they will all select one by one in a logicl order.
all you have to do is make sure you line them all up and use that torch to make sure that the water pump tube is definately in the water pump pick up hole in its top.
You may have to jiggle the gear rods to get them back in there selective positions
Gently rock the power head to align the splines on the drive shaft.
Now just refit the two lower casing bolts and prop.
Tighnen and adjust if neccasary the gear selector rods. Test them with the gear lever and turning the prop by hand.
Make sure befor turning the prop that the spark plug is removed to prevent it accidentaly starting and removeing your fingers.
Re-fit the rubber bung and test in .
Hope this is not to long winded
Joe

I have the same outboard and serviced it myself from new... IE changed the oil and greased everything. How often should you replace the impellor. The outboard gets virtually no use at all, maybe 4 - 5 hours a season!!!

thanks

If you have never changed the impellor then the way to change it is above.
It should be replaced at least every two years.
The amount an engine is used makes no difference to the impellor.
It is made of rubber and so will and does perish.
Also it can become worn due to sand and poor water conditions.
Also the little arms can become distorted due to long periods of inactivity.
Cheers
Joe

Hi Joe.

I am NEW to the boating game, having only bought one for fishing on inland waters. I have a mariner magnum 10Hp 2-stroke and would like to know what needs done for a regular service but more importantly how what needs done IS done. I use the boat mainly during the winter months for the type of fishing I do and have recently noticed that at high revs there is quite a bit of smoke coming out!!! I can't read the engine number exept that it's made in Belgium. I assume you check the plugs, oil level (or change it) what's the plug gap, what type of oil in the gearbox, and how you actually get it in. I'm getting quotes of around £100 for a service plus parts. I've had it for about 15 months. Does the pump impeller need renewed? If so, how...Having read this I think I'm asking some very kind person to spell it out for me on paper. I saw your "istructions" on the Mariner 5HP service and was, to say the least impressed with the depth and detail. You are not in the right job by the looks of it. If you can help I would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance of your anticipated and detailed help.
Brian
