Mariner 40hp 2 stroke

Hi can anyone help. Fairly new to this. We have purchased a boat with this engine and we are having problems so have decided to strip it down, give it a good service. I have notices some of the cable are not connected, can anyone tell me what they are? I think they are charge cables for lighting that's not fitted but not sure. 2 green and a red and then 2 green separate, I assume the greens connect but unsure where the red should be. Many thanks for any help.

You may be able to find a manual which covers your engine here Boatinfo - The library, containing manuals, brochures and other technical documents from the last hundred years! Some are genuine Merc/ Mariner manuals but others are Seloc manuals. If you can find a genuine one you are in luck ... thats what you really need . Seloc manuals cover too many models.

Sorry. Many thanks. I have no idea of the year as I don't think it has the correct top and has been painted so no decals.
Its a 40E OE9 S 10081 2 stroke 2 cylinder. 1980's I would think.
I will look and see if I can find a manual.

I have drawn a blank on that model number.

I think there is another, final, digit which is illegible

In which case it would make it a 1982 model, Numbers for 1982 ran from 6E9-100581 to 6E9-101875

It is almost certainly a rebadged Yamaha so the wiring code for Yamaha might apply Wiring Color Codes for YAMAHA Outboard Motors.

It looks like those wires are comming off the Rectifier/Regulator and may indeed be charge wires for the main battery. It is quite common for outboards to have wires on them that were never connected to things. This is because they used the same parts to build them as other models that had in effect 'optional extras' just like cars have today
