Hi everybody, my mate has just got himself a very nice 10ft quicksilver inflatable with a mariner 10hp 2stroke, its all second hand but only done about 10 hours and looks like its just come out of the shop, got it from somebody we know, so we know its a genuine 10 hours, anyway my mate asked me to go out with him on it yesterday down anglesey mainly cos he has never done any boating and I have have, anyway at the end of a very good day I was showing him how to flush it out in a tank of water and I put my finger in the water flow from the tell tale and found it was to my mind quite hot and it was a warm day and this was within seconds of starting the engine, all my experience is with big outboards 60hp plus and I have never noticed the tell tale being hot maybe luke warm even on full power, I am hoping its just the way these small outboards run, what do you guys think.

Regards Nick.

If you had been using the engine, then left it for a few minutes before flushing it then it's quite possible for it to run hot for a minute before it goes luke warm again. An engine of that size will throw out hot water when it is being run hard, but I doubt if you were doing that when flushing it.

If the tell tale is producing a good flow then I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just check it next time its used.

The only other thought is that maybe the thermostat is playing up but if you had no problem all day it's unlikely.

Hi andy, no the jet is not as strong as I would expect but the engine was at idle speed, but I am not that familiar with it, my yam 60 on tickover has a very powerful jet and is cold from start up, the guy that owns it said not able to rev up cos it goes into gear if you twist the throttle any more is yours like that andy, just wondering if maybe the tell tale goes cooler when the stat opens, but all the other motors I have had are cold from start, and stay that way.

I had an outboard in a tank for quite some time tuning it after some engine work.
The telltale became quite hot because the water was running through the motor and back into the tank, so was steadily heating up. Doesnt sound like your situation though.

Given that you had been running for some time without problems, I would keep an eye on it but not worry too much unless it was too hot to hold your hand under for any length of time.
