Marine16 - When to treat?

Our new (To us) boat tank was brimmed (Approx 500 litres) early November, then she was lifted out late November, and is due to go back in early March.

Unfortunately, due to excitement of new boat etc etc, I didn't treat the fuel when she was filled up.

I will be using Marine16 Diesel Fuel Complete as the ongoing treatment, and can't decide when is best to add this.

If I treat the tank now, will the Marine16 mix properly as the boat is not moving? Or should I wait until she is back in the water and add the Marine16 then?

Does anyone have any thoughts or advice?

add now, it will disperse, issues are at bottom of a tank anyway so if it just falls to the bottom it will be where it needs to do its job.

+1 to Marine 16 BTW, best out there IMO.
 
Perhaps pre-mix the marine 16 in with a gallon of diesel will disperse it better in the tank . Assuming you have space for a gallon.
 
Thankyou Gents, I suspected as much. Good point about adding to a gallon of diesel before adding to the main tank. I will sort it out this coming weekend.
 
Marine 16 is a biocide diesel bug killer the one we use commercially is Grotamar 82.

I add neat Grotamar 82 with a measuring jug partway through when I am fuelling the boat and I am happy it will mix, if I add it to a tank when the boat will not be used I tend to put 2 or 3 litres of diesel in a gallon can add the Grotamar 82 to and shake it well and add that to the boat's fuel tank.

also if you have a sump or a drain on your tank pull out any water and crud with a Pella pump from time to time and check and drain water from the Racor, Volvo Penta or Separ Pre filters and check the filter elements for bug and crud, if they are sealed in a steel can ( Fleetguard etc ) cut them open and inspect or you won't know.
 
We premix into a litre bottle because it's easier to share equally between 2 tanks. We put half a bottle into each side at every fill.
 
The ratio for 'Complete, is 1ml to 1 litre, so it's an easy calculation. The marine16 bottles have scales on them so you can get reasonably close. It says on the bottle that you can't overdose.
 
Depends on time of year. I make sure the tanks are full over the winter, when the opportunity for condensation in the tank is more pevelent. In the summer, his is not really an issue, so fill up when convenient.
 
Martyn, just for my understanding.... why premix it, when the same effect occurs when you stick it in the tank?

The amount of treatment product used is small.
In normal circumstances I put the treatment in immediately before adding fuel.
If adding the treatment but no fuel I would be concerned the treatment might just sit in the filler pipe or not disperse into the fuel. In this case premixing the treatment with some diesel seems a good means of being certain the full dose of treatment is all added to the fuel in the tank.
 
Do people let the tank get close to empty before filling? Or top up the fuel more frequently? If the latter how do you figure out how much marine16 to add?

I usually don't let the tanks get close to empty . Usually not below half unless a journey dictates otherwise.
I have fuel gauges but they are not very precise. However I have reasonable idea how much fuel I will be adding.

You can't over dose with marine 16 . I think its the same with other products.

If during fuel top up in the spring/summer , I put in a little less than the dose recommended I don't let that worry me. On occasions in the summer when the fuel is to be consumed within a week I sometimes do not add any treatment.

For the last fill up of the year I make sure the amount of treatment added is generous so the boat is over wintering with at least the recommended dose. I also like the tanks to be reasonably near full over winter.
