Hello,
This is my first post. For good reason, wood finish posts are a hot topic, as you can loose valuable time and money with ignorant decisions.
I’m a finisher by trade, interior wood flooring and staircases, and have been testing finishes for my sailboat, for some time now. Teak on boat, and testing on full sun teak patio furniture.
I’ve tested spar varnishes, penetrating oils and hardwax oils with UV inhibitors. All have had short lives, the coatings, requiring a lot more work to refinish than the others.
My last test was exterior WOCA penetrating oil, with Carbon Method ceramic wood coating. It also failed, and after having a long conversation with the chemist, he thinks it was due to the properties in WOCA, being a modified oil/water.
I am now looking to try Cetol Marine or Woodskin. I know these two finishes have been heavily discussed here, and I tried to find and read all I could. It is said that Woodskin replaced Cetol Marine, but those were older posts, and Cetol Marine is still being sold, so I’m a little confused by that, and also older posts, people have used and compared both. It seems like Woodskin has a bit over Cetol Marine, in reference to longevity.
Ok, so, my main question is, some apply a gloss coat over the Cetol Marine. I’m wondering if it would make sense to apply the ceramic coating over the Cetol Marine, or over Woodskin. I don’t care about the additional gloss, as I’m a fan of lower sheen finishes for the most part, it will just add abrasive and chemical strength.
It’s appears that wood stains will last about 3 years if maintained. As others, I’m mostly concerned with peeling and cracking and the labor of stripping and refinishing. My deck isn’t covered and it gets a lot of water pooling against toe railing etc. The Ceramic coating should last a couple years, with basic maintenance, then, an easy coating, but not sure if it’s worth it, if it’s just going to peel in three years!
