Marine VHF Car aerial

[ QUOTE ]
it is supposedly illegal to use a hand held VHF from shore to call up family dingy to collect you from restaurant

[/ QUOTE ] I find it more convenient to make the family wait at the jetty whilst I'm dining. Avoids unnecessary delays. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

No this will be a properly fitted set - not a hand held. Much better range. I don't think it's illegal to use a radio when driving - all the taxis and police do.

cheers

Ian

I think it's only mobile phones which are dangerous and illegal, but I'm prepared to be corrected. Will you get rid of the CB?

We have an SSB kit, but to be fair you won't get the range you're used to and it's no good at night when it dims the headlights. Other problems we've seen is it upsets the engine management systems on some cars

One customer with a Ferrari was very pleased because it defeated the speed limiter, but we've had a lot of complaints and the antenna is a bit long for every-day work

wot abt the earth and would a plastic reliant robin be suitable? Not everyone has a ferrari, don't you know .. harrumph

Earthing is no problem, we can supply a low impedance chain. Generally good for a seasons use

I don't want this to come across badly, but our kits are bespoke and costly. You would be our first Reliant enquiry, and frankly we don't do 'oneoffs'. Perhaps a group of you could club together and pool a more suitable vehicle?

Dear Sir,

Thank you for replying to my letter so promptly wherein I ask if one of your devices would fit my Reliant Robin.

Can I also be frank? There are many more Reliants on the UK roads than Ferraris and I think you are being less than polite to a large section of the motoring public by suggesting we "pool" our cars. A 3 wheeler is no more amphibious than a Ferrari.

You are missing a superb marketing opportunity, in my opinion. Whereas a Ferrari will break down frequently and I often see their glum faces in my rear view mirror which is offset so that the back door division does not obstruct my vision and thus I get to see the pee'd off totty in the passengers seat as well, my Robin never breaks down, at least not in the engine department. Reliants are reliable!

Now the USP for my Reliant Robins is that during really high cross winds when my Robin tips over (I will admit to a small problem in the stability department) I have this huge aerial mounted on the roof which according to Archimedes (or was it Newton?) means it will be easy to lever my Robin back on her 3 wheels.

I am etc etc

Oh dear. I had hoped to avoid any unpleasantness and have obviously expressed myself badly. My apologies

One of my best friends is married to a lovely woman who has a younger brother with a Robin, so you'll see that I hold nothing against the marque as such. You quote Archimedes (or was it Newton), but it's to Gilbert and Lorenz you should be looking in this instance for their pioneering work on magnetism

You simply cannot stick a mag-mount to a plastic car. There, I've said it and I'm sorry if it causes offence but there you are

Dear Tome (I hope U don't mind me getting on 1st name terms so early in our correspondence)

It is wonderful to a techno-crutz like me when a gee-whiz technocrat like your good self takes the time and troble to reply to my humble suggestions.

I thought the two gentleman you mention wrote operas. Please excuse my ignorance.

Us Reliant owners are a resourceful bunch, don't you know? A few self-tappers and we'd have your aerial mounted. So, could I offer my conveyance as a guinea pig to try out your wonderful radio job? It would make such a change to be able to listen to the whole WORLD from inside my little cabin as I'm chugging along.

Yours sincerely, I am etc etc

would the aerial be OK for navtex and gps signals as well
I've got a gap in the roof lining if need be to have an inductive coil.
I think I may be able to install it myself.

thanks

My dear Para (if I may continue in the personal vein in which I am indeed flattered to be addressed)

I realise that there's a lot to take in, and that I barely scratched the surface with my rather brief and inadequate reply. It is good of you to offer to develop an alternative mounting arrangement, but I beg you to hear me out in full before making alterations to your fine vehicle

Moving on to Heinrich Hertz, a Teutonic gentleman of the late 19th Century with a brain the size of Lower Saxony, who was able to demonstrate that radio waves behaved as predicted by James Clerk Maxwell. I believe he also enjoyed opera, but I will spare you the chapter and verse of Untersuchungen Ueber Die Ausbreitung Der Elektrischen Kraft.

Suffice it to say that a fookin plastic car won't form an adequate ground plane to use with our antennas and you will achieve a better range using semaphore gestures similar to the ones you practise when a small gust inverts your fine vehicle

If I can be of further assistance please don't hesitate

Dear MR TOME

I feel my last letter was not taken in the spirit of general science advancement intended, particularly as the business case I outlined for Robin owners was, I thought, compelling.

I see you are warming to my idea when you mention Herr Hertz. I'm sure Mr (Herr?) Hertz would support our plan particularly as we in the UK prefer to go on cycles and feel that you could make a minature device adapted from our proposed three wheeler for 2 wheels.

I have however received a communication from a brother Robin owner requesting the addition of various other aerials which just shows what a good idea it was.

Hoping to change your mind, I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours in anticipation
