I am currently undergoing the Honours Project for the final year of the degree Marine Studies (Ocean Yachting) BSc at the University of Plymouth. The chosen question of reasearch "IS THE STANDARD 10 YEAR STANDING RIGGING REPLACEMENT ADVICE FROM INSURERS REASONABLE?"
The aim is to produce a more specific guidance to owners, riggers and insurers alike to allow for an improved safety and standard.
Part of the data collection process is questionnaires from yacht owners. Below is a link of the questionnaire which i would be very greatfull if you could download here and take a few minutes of your time to fill in and forward back to me @ simon.tibbott@students.plymouth.ac.uk

P.S. thanks to all those who have already replied and emailed me a completed questionnaire. I am very greatfull not only for your replies but also for your comments, possitive or negative.- keep em' coming. I have concequently updated the questionnaire accordingly, and please add information if you feel it nessecery. yes i will be posting my results on here as a completed honours project for those who are interested.
thanks again.

I look forward to the conclusion. I am not convinced that the question is quite right though.

When I approached my insurance company this year on recommendations / advice / statistics etc. they could give me none. They only require it to be kept in good condition and would not require or advise me on longevity.

My rigger, however, said 10 years for stainless and it starts becoming brittle.

Thanks Simon,

Will you be make your findings available on this forum, or at least publicise on here where they can be found? I'm sure there are those who would be interested to read a summary of your work and conclusions.

Good luck,

Mark.

I have sent you the completed questionnaire but would point out that my insurers do not advise on how often rigging should be replaced. I'm sure they would use the fact it hadn't been replaced to wriggle out of paying should I have reason to claim.

My insurers don't directly recommend on rigging replacement, but when I bought the boat and had it surveyed, the surveyor recommended that the rig was replaced every 10-years. My insurance is subject to all the surveyors essential recommendations being carried out. So they get round it that way.

A far better question is " Is rigging wire over 10 years old reliable?"
Which is perhaps the same question. I can assure you when sailing if the mast breaks and falls down while it is nice to be insured there are more immediate problems like recovering yourself and the boat.

Well Simon I did try to do the survey but I don't think you will have recieved it.

My experience with friends having rigging wire failure is that it does let go after in excess of 20years. Usually the wire at the bottom where it goes into swage. usually there is no warning or way to inspect for condition. Smaller boats with 3/16 1x19 seem more susceptible.
I had a an aft swept spreader attachment fail on fractional rig which caused loss of mast and one friend had all bolt of an external chain plate shear off. Other wise 3 different cases of wire failure. One was of a 26fter with 1.4inch 1x19.

My opinion is that rigging screws tangs etc are pretty reliable but wire is not after 15 to 20 years. So if an insurance company called for replacement at 15 years I would agree. My insurance company don't seem concerned but do require a survey for insuring older boats. Mine in 25 years has never been surveyed. But it is on its 4th mast. good luck olewill

Simon,

Can you share with us here details of the questions you will be asking of others - surveyors, insurers, riggers, boatyards, chandlers, etc., and your methodology?
