Was the 'carpenter' an experienced boat builder or just some jobbing carpenter? If the former, he has no excuse. If the latter, he might claim that he had no reason to suppose that what was sold as 'marine ply' wasn't fit for the purpose intended

Even in the latter case, that's something the carpenter has to take up with Jewsons, not bleat to his customer about.

I'm not sure why you went to Jewson for a refund if you did not buy the ply yourself (or direct the joiner to buy specific ply there).

You may have weakened your case for a refund of labour or making good FOC.

Hope it works out-

Thanks nick, my chippie sourced the only local ply online and I gave him the cash to go get it, it did cross my mind that to take a refund might weaken my case.
My original choice for wood was pine, I hate ply.

I'm aware that an acquaintance purchased quite a volume of supposedly top quality marine ply from another prominent supplier named above, and used this to part-build one hull of a large catamaran. It was then discovered that much of this v. expensive ply had numerous inter-laminate voids. Investigations by the honorable supplier lead to them replacing all the ply with hand-picked 'good' stuff AND paying for a boat-builder chippy to replace the inadequate stuff.

Now that was good customer relations. Their reputation emerged intact, even enhanced.

Mistakes happen. It's what happens next that counts.....

Did a project some years ago and the 'marine ply' did the same. Appeared to have been glued with flour and water paste! Was told then it had been Chinese stuff, but hell of a game redoing the whole job. Probably legally the chippies problem but seems a bit unfair to me.

Nope, he I suspect claims to be a professional and thus should have known exactly what he was buying and what he should have been buying.

I doubt very much Jewsons sell marine ply. They might offer WBP but that shouldn't delaminate either.

They do and I have used it without any probs, though only inside. However it is not BS1088 but is wbp, but as it is cheap - £50 for a 8x4 sheet of 12mm, I would not expect it to be as good as 1088 ply.

How can it be classified as a marine ply if it does not conform to BS1088?

I left a dry intact off cut in the rain earlier, its falling apart already. I despair, this will set my project back weeks, and my yard fees will quadruple.

This misrepresentation of "marine plywood" seems common throughout the building trade.

Travis Perkins even contradict themselves on their website by describing their plywood as "marine" but then specifying "WBP"

http://www.travisperkins.co.uk/c/timber-sheet-materials/plywood/893617

I wonder what trading standards would have to say about that?

What is the legal definition of "Marine Plywood" ?

A local timber yard sells "Exterior" wbp plywood if it gets wet it will last outside approx one day before it delaminates. I have seen so called Marine ply that is little better. Most of this stuff comes from China or other far eastern countries.
I wont use it anywhere near a boat.
