I have a small area of shelving to replace/repair inside my Sabre 27.

Currently it has 6mm faced (Sapele?) marine ply in situ. I have been quoted £112 + VAT for a complete sheet and I need, at worst, 18" x 12", could do with a bit less if I scarf a bit in.

I haven't found a suitable offcut (Cornwall, around Falmouth) in anybody's bins.

So would you use non-marine grade ply, for a job inside the boat? (Still quoted £50 + VAT! for an 8' x 4' sheet)

Jewsons Exeter do marine ply for around £35 a sheet. Ask your Jewsons to order some in from them. They may do 1/2 sheets too BOL

I dn't see why not if it is properly painted or varnished and not going to be near a leaking galley tap. I have ordinary ply inside my Sabre and it has stood up to everything perfectly well.

I used exterior ply to do my shelving - was non structural so couldn't see a problem. Gave it a good varnish and then faced it off afterwards.

Try Woodstock on Tregoniggie Ind Est Penryn, always got offcuts of exotic real wood, or Treviscoe Build Sups Treviscoe St Austell 01726 821199 for cheap timber prices

If it's a non-structural application, and the boat's interior is dry, then why not use a cheaper grade?

If the boat isn't dry - make it so, otherwise you may end up with more to worry about than shelving.

Do you live near a boatbuilder? If so, pop in and ask if they have any offcuts. I always do this and get usuable sizes of ply for next to nothing.
