i am sure there has been a thread on here recently about the use of forecourt deisel against marine deisel.
Can anyone piont me in the right direction as i am led to believe forecourt deisel would be better for my volvo md1b

There was a very informative discussion about the differences between red and white diesel. Several contributors (myself included) made completely mistaken statements and were corrected by Refueler. The basic point was that there is no important difference at the point of production but issues might arise through storage and rate of turnover.

When the MD1 was designed and on market - diesel was a different beast and higher levels of sulphur. Red in those days was basic 0.2% sulphur stock with dye marker added. It didn't need anything else added.
Later Green groups and various put pressure on that sulphur levels should be reduced - road diesel was hit first and we had City Diesel as example appeared (Who remembers City Diesel ? Interesting tale as to hwo it got it's name ... but that's another tale). Evolution took it's course and Red had it's sulphur reduced steadily until average now is 0.1% and lower. Depending on stock and possible reasons for ULSD - you could have situation that red supplied could be low sulphur as road.
But all low sulphur diesels have additives to replace the lubrication quality lost with reduction of sulphur and other components washed out in de-sulphuring process.

So is your MD1 better on road diesel ? TBH - I don't know and TBH I wouldn't worry about it. If there is any difference - that would be so small a difference in engine life IMHO to academic only.

I have heard from various that xxx brand or xxx type diesel is better than xxx ... trouble is I have to stifle the chuckle that tries to escape - when I know that source of the fuel is same.

I am not allowed for commercial reasons to say who is buying fuel my company lab blends for the trader. But I can say this that I bet a lot of your boats tanks out there in UK / France ... have some of my fuel in them - yes yes yes - you can tell by the soot !! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So in a nutshell ? I would buy what is most convenient to buy and provide to the boat.
