The Marine Navigator app for Android now has an AIS function for an extra £2 on top of the £6.50 for the app. I know this is not everyone's favourite app but for me this is a very affordable way of turning an Android tablet into a very effective chart plotter. I use the charts from Visit My Harbour, over 800 UK Admiralty charts for £15. My existing AIS receiver does not have WiFi so I bought one of these to feed the AIS data to the app http://yakbitz.com/Yakker.aspx for £36

No conection, just a satisfied user.

Update:-

Ronald Koenig the Marine Navigator app developer certainly provides good support. I was having problems with the app but after several email exchanges with him it became apparent it was not the app but he still took the trouble to explain how to restore the animation settings on my tablet.

I'm interested in this too.... I've just wired in my AIS receiver (Quark) which does do the wifi bit to my android. But I have Navionics charts which don't use AIS so I am considering which way to go. I loaded the free app of open CPN just to test I had installed my hardware, but I am not sure of my next move. So what are other android tablet navigators doing? I realise the picture has changed since half of the internet app reviews were written. Very likely I will follow Plum unless given a helpful steer here. Should I stick with the open CPN app and get some charts? I haven't had time to play with my new toy yet.:)

I found OpenCPN slow on Android.

The Marine Navigator app' was basic and lacked AIS, good to see they have added AIS.

I also have the iSailor app', which does have AIS, charts are cheap and works well on Android.

.
Something doesn't sound right there , mine is plenty zippy though on a nice Xperia tablet . But their forum doesn't get constant complaints of running slow on android . Was it the developers paid version or the old free one?

The ais display on OpenCPN must be as good as anything available on any machine .

Now you mention it, it was the free version. It worked reasonably well, but panning or zooming was ridiculously slow.

I now use OpenCPN on my laptop and on a Samsung tablet running Win 10 and agree the AIS is very good.

I have no problems either with OpenCPN on Sony Experia tablets. The free version is very dated now as it doesn't have any of the recent improvements over the last two or three years. It's well worth the $10 or whatever for the developer's version.

It depends on your plans. AIS works very well as a radar-type display without any charts and I often prefer this mode on my tablet so if the display is not going to be your main navigational chart display then you can use OpenCPN without charts, or with any old free charts on Android, or use a free radar-type display on Android.

If your AIS display hardware is going to be your main navigational display then I don't think that you don't have any realistic "cost-free" options and other forumites, who are not from Yorkshire, are better placed to advise. :)

Mine works fine on my Samsung Android tablet with an OTG cable (for 3.50) and my transponder. My only complaint with Marine Navigator is I've yet to find a way to reduce the size of the boat icon so t the moment when I zoom out it's the size of a the Isle of Wight...

In Marine Navigator, if you go into "settings" and select "size of symbols" you have a choice of 5 sizes.

Sorry for pulling up an old post. I have a question very much related to this post.

I am using Marine Navigator on a tablet (sony xperia) with charts from VMH and I’m happy with it. I have recently added the AIS function to the Marine Navigator via a Matsutec HP-33A AIS transponder and a Quark Wi-Fi hub. It all works very well except for one thing. On the display I get my position from the tablet and the AIS. I effectively keep crashing in to myself!
Does anybody have any ideas on how to avoid this? I suppose I need to find a way of blocking my position as sent out by the AIS. But how??

Click the spanner icon on left ,then top row of tabs select ships you might have to move the tabs along by touching the full stops on thr right.
Then select ship icon type.change from default to vector or bitmap cant remember which you can then change size by pixels you can even move the position dit about within the icon

I also had that app until my tablet went for a sail ( down the stairs).
I bought an identical replacement and managed to have most of my apps transferred but no charts. I have tried on numerous occasions to make contact but they only seem interested in selling a new set.
Previously, I had memorymap and they allowed me to transfer to several different computers, so I am ditching iSailor not just on poor customer service, but the charts were very average as well.

MMSI number? with Marine Navigator app now has AIS

I have now got the AIS app upgrade with Marine Navigator and VMH charts. Have not had time to play with it much but from what I remember seeing if you click on a boat you don't get the MMSI number. Have I got that right? I think you get the boat name and maybe a call sign?
