I simply don't believe there is not a supplier of 'O' rings in New Zealand.

I think Marine Direct are saying they don't want the business. To sell 2 'O' rings costs as much to process as 1,000 rings.

I have a sense of misgiving regarding buying such items as batteries and "O" rings from Chinese sellers but I can buy 100 10mm X 3mm "O" rings on eBay for under $10 and they would be great for sealing around through-deck bolt holes.

Depends what you mean by batteries but lithium batteries can't be sent by airfreight from China and sea freight from China (and other parts of the world), for a variety of reasons, is suffering delays. If you buy 'something' from China that contains batteries then China Post will remove the. batteries before sending them on. Sometimes the batteries are in an 'essential' holder and they will simply remove the holder and batteries but you then cannot use batteries sourced locally - because you don't have the holder. If you are buying 'O' rings (or anything else that is cheap) off eBay - then they most probably are made in China and the seller maybe Chinese. We overcome some of the issues because we have a friend in China who collects anything we buy direct, checks what we have bought, packs it and sends it on (minus any lithium batteries). I have bought shackles etc (for testing) this way. The young lady is employed by and does this for a relative of ours in South Africa who sources product for a chain of 'supermarkets' they own in SA.

I am sure that some battery manufacturers in China are making product as good as anything you can source outside China - but you have no way of knowing. Its a lottery. I'm thinking the Chinese MG EV.

I source chain from an importer in Melbourne, he works with one Chinese supplier and tests each batch he receives (he is a NATA approved test facility) and I insist on having a copy of the test results. He takes the risks and the hassle of import documentation etc. I have been using him for about 4 years now and he is still much cheaper than buying prime Oz or EU product. BUT - I did hear from another importer, also a NATA approved test facility, that they rejected a batch of shackles (after testing to standard test procedures) - and sent the whole lot back).

I bought a coating thickness meter direct from China (measuring galvanising thickness). It was cheap as chips. The exact same meter is used by International Galvanisers but bought locally costs 5 times as much. My meter only measures 'flat' surfaces and technology has now moved on and you can buy devices that measure coating thickness on wire. The Chinese last time I looked did not make these instruments - but maybe - next year (not that I'm buying - I've worked round the restriction.

You win some, you lose some.

Take care, stay safe
