Hi, Im looking to get a cd player for my dads 26' Yacht. Its his birthday soon and his (very) old car radio/tape player has recently died due to it being kept on a boat that is frequently raced.

I've looked into the classy and costly marine stereo systems, but have heard tales of these finding it difficult to survive on a yacht (despite that being their purpose). So at the end of the day, Im looking at something affordable, and reliable.

To the point... Does anyone have any idea how to DIY waterproof a NZ$100ish (~US$70 radio/CD player) so that it would survive on a boat.

A little more info on the boat and its conditions. As i mentioned it is raced regularly, nothing offshore, just friendly (though competitive) racing. It has a few leaks, but these are controlled as best they can be, with the help of ice-cream pots to catch drips, etc. The boat is cared for, just not done up to be a luxurious cruising vessel.

Thank you /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi Steve,
I put a cheapy stereo on my boat. No probs with the radio/tape bit but the CD player very rapidly went ape. I guess it was the general dampness in the air - although our boat is 'dry' by most standards. If I were to fit another system I would go for a removable or portable CD player bit and just take it home when not needed. Happy birthday Dad

iPod or similar

I would forget the CD player and go for a basic car radio/cassette and an iPod or similar (with large disk) and copy his 100 favourite CDs. Using the FM radio transmitter or the dummy cassette with lead/3.5mm jack to connect the two.

Joe.

stevek,
The problem with standard radio cd players is not always to keep the frontcover dry but keeping moisture out of the inside, marine radio's cd metal components are stainless steel and protected with some special product so the don't get rusty and break after a few months, Clarion has a very good one on wich you even can connect a marine cd changer and a (wired) but very good remote control, you can use at the swimming platform, actually i have it in my boat and works very fine, they are fitted originaly by sea ray and doral that i know off. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'd go with the cheap car variety and get a new one when it gives up. The 'marine' type units are incredibly expensive - you could probably buy 5 car units for the same money.

Re: iPod or similar

I bought an iPod earlier this year, (i think from Amazon who were the cheapest at that time) and connect to any FM radio using an iTrip. Fantastic, and can be used at home, in the car and on my boat.

The only downside was loading all my CDs, but now that's done, I wouldn't be without it.

My GME "marine" Cd player was never satisfsactory although the same make cassette
player works fine. Cactus recommend Clarion. However it might be more cost effective
to buy a car system and put in a waterproof box which are for sale.
See Gaelforce offer of marine Cd player at £259 with a remote control.

I'm impressed with the most basic Alpine CD player in my car.
There's an interesting article on 12volt entertainment in July no62 Lattitudes&Attitudes.
The writer recommends fitting a Cdradio with input jacks on the front panel
so you can plug in an Ipod. He recommends the Sony CDX-F5700.

Paid a hundredish pounds about 18 months ago for a JVC FM radio and CD/MP3 player from Halfords the car stockists. Bloody fantastic unit giving no problems whatsoever so far (touching wood now). MAJOR advantage with these units is the ability to read MP3's from a standard CD giving something like 20hrs worth of music without having to keep going below to change disc. Big help on a long singlehanded leg.

Change of subject slightly - has anyone bought one of these units which are also DVD players from ebay yet? Thinking about it since it would eliminate the requirement to fire up the laptop and connect it to the TV...... I know - sad life of the liveaboard!

All,
For my birthday I ended up with a tape-jack connector for my ipod and a wireless FM connector for my ipod as seen at :

Now unwanted gift, so if you want the item which is un-opened and have it delivered from Manchester and not Hong-Kong then you can have it for £5.50 including postage; cost I believe £7.50; email me if your interested.

Cheers
