In case some of you do not read Motor Boat Chat (will you admit to it?!), and therefore miss my similar posting, is there anyone out there that has berthing experience at Camper Nicholson's or Haslar Marina in Gosport. As we spend quite a bit of time on board even if the weather prevents us from going out (we're Midlands based), we are concerned that the wash from ferries/commercial traffic may make life uncomfortable. Haslar seem the cheaper of the two, is there a reason for this? Our new boat will be delivered in January 2003, (37' sailing boat), and we may consider moving from our usual base in Southampton Water.
Your comments would be appreciated, thanks.

Mike,
I was a berth holder at Haslar for 5 years and have been at Campers for 1 year my observations are:

They are both good marinas. Differences
Campers has lift out facilities in the winter Haslar does not
Campers the electricity is all in at Haslar it is metered and expensive.
Haslar has over 100 charter boats intermingled with owner boats for us this was a problem.
Haslar offers a 10 month contract un banded by size. Campers only offers a 12 month banded by size contract.

Both marinas have good and bad berths.

Haslar you want to be on a-f otherwise you have a problem
Campers you want to either be tight in and up harbour end or on J K l facing any weather.

If Haslar had offered us a good berth when we moved to 38 ft we would have stayed but they did not and we are very pleased with Campers.

Next time it really blows have a wander round both marinas.

We were in Haslar for 8 years at the seaward end of F pontoon. It's a very friendly marina, but our berth was very rolly, especially since the pilot boats moved to the opposite side of Haslar Creek. The price, in common with other marinas, has risen steeply in the last few years, and we haved moved to a mooring in Portsmouth Harbour which is not only much cheaper but a lot calmer. You may find the inboard end of pontoons A to E or F are less bouncy.

I really dont think there is much between them really. For a 37' Haslar will work out slightly cheaper on 2002 tariffs, despite Campers' free 'leccy unless you want winter land storage.

I'd make the choice according to the availability of specific berths. Some parts of both marinas get rocked by wash quite badly, despite anti-wash pontoons. Look out for end-of-pontoon closed berths with no room to swing, such as the one I'm enduring at Campers! You can have L27 next year when they find me something less awkward.

I'll second most of the comments re: Haslar (been there for 5+yrs). Used to be notably cheaper than Campers but prices have crept up to being almost comparable. Getting a berth facing into the prevailing wind helps when mooring if there are only a couple of you. I'm in the quiet end of B pontoon - no problems whatsoever except when the wind is strong from the E when I need to reverse up the pontoons to get out.
