We are buying a new boat for January delivery, and are considering various Marinas in/around the Solent as a change from our Southampton based one. I know all the Southampton/Hamble based ones, but we are interested in both Haslar and Camper Nicholson's in Gosport. We've visited both (by car) and like their facilities, but living in the Midlands, we spend quite a lot of time aboard even if the weather prevents us from going out, and we are concerned about the severity of the ferry/commercial traffic wash on the pontoons . Based on the prices we have seen, Haslar seems significantly cheaper than Campers, is there a reason for this - is there a downside?. Anyone with berthing experience of either of these? If so, I would welcome your comments to help us decide where to go (the new boat is 37' overall)
Many thanks

Nicho,
Why don't you take a look at Southsea marina. It has all the ameneties less the ferry traffic. We've been there for three years now and love it. Oh yeah its gonna be a lot cheaper than any other marina on Portsea island. Speak to Sandy or Rupert and mention us to them, Kev and Gail, boats name Dream Catcher.
Good luck

Nicho,
I think this wash problem is being overstated.
I am at Haslar, having moved from Southsea.
It is fair to say that the wash is wost nearest the harbour. I am half way down, and occasionally we go through a few gyrations, but most of the time it is calm or a slight bobbing which I find quite pleasent.
By comparison, Campers is v. bad. As for S/Sea you are shut away in a pit, with still water and sometimes evil smelling at that, and no full access- +/- 3 hrs HW
The space between piers at Haslar is superb, this being the reason I moved from S/Sea, where the boats are crammed in. My boat is a similar in size to your proposed one, and I had about the length of it to back into and turn around-a nightmare.
Also the main walkways and pontoons are wider and longer at Haslar.
I love the night views at Haslar, with all the lights of Gunwharf Key and passing ferries.
As to you question why is Haslar cheaper than Campers, I cannot really answer that. It's a commercial world.

No! of the 3 that have been mentioned, I would not think about going anywhere else other than Haslar.
By the way, space IS limited there and is difficult to get a berth- a testament in it's own right.
Good luck

I've stayed overnight at Hasler and suffered badly from the ferry wash problem. The visitors pontoons are on the outer edge of the marina and most exposed to the incoming wash.
I'd recommend that you look at the location of any available berth and check it out personally before committing.

I think you need to be fairer about the wash problem - where I was moored in Haslar it was awful. Now, it didn't seem too bad on a sunny day having a few beers, but on a wet miserable evening, watching TV with a cup of T it was bloody terrible. I would guess that if you were moored towards the harbour office, it would be better.

I would guess that it is nearly full because it is cheap, no other reason. You also have a long walk from the car park (if you can get in), you have a view of 3 'orrible blocks of flats, there are no decent restaurants.

But it is cheap

there, I've said it!

We looked at both Haslar and Gosport marina's earlier this year. Nearly went to Haslar but did not like the view of the 60's tower blocks, or the walk from the car-park. Gosport was having alot of work done, but do tend to cram a boat into any space.
The reason Gosport is slightly more expensive is because electricity is free, great in the winter when you leave the fan heater and dehumidifier running.
In the end we went to Ocean Village - Southampton.

you better get in quick where ever you decide berths are few and far between at the moment. but you get what you pay for, i bought my boat while it was berthed at Southsea and moved it instantly. the staff are useless getting a quote for work was almost impossible even after many requests the owner sandy just kept on making excuses for the staff, it was a joke ,the guy berthed next to me also had similar experieiences.the trouble is once youve paid your money if you decide to moved unlike most other marinas you get nothing back. plus southsea is a miserable place and your tide locked. look elsewhere.

Re: marina prices

For 10 - 12 m, Gosport is £350. Haslar is about £320, but electricity is not included, and they have no winter storage, whereas Campers have space for 100, at the cost of the lift out and in.

On price, the decision really lies on whether you want to leave heating and dehumidifier on board over winter.

Both are very yottie-centric. You might prefer Port Solent for a higher ratio of motoryachts.

Re: marina prices

David - difficult to actually compare at the moment. Haslar are yet to announce 2003 prices, but their current rate is £320 per metre per year (regardless of boat size), although the best guess at the Show was that this would increase to £330/£340. C & N have changed the way of charging for 2003, and now each pontoon finger berth has it's own individual price - of course, certain length boats can only go on certain fingers. The way it will work is that you are given a (probably limited) number of berths to choose from, some being less prone to wash and disturbance than others, and their price reflects this. For our 11.4 metre boat on a quiet (wash wise) part of the marina, we were quoted £4750 for 12 months from April 1st 2003, but this did include all electricity (32amps).

Interested in the varying views on Southsea marina. We have become very fed up with the unprofessional attitude of our current yard in Mill Rythe, a "two week" engine change is still not finished having started at the beginning of June (although it now almost finished, possibly, who knows or cares, certainly not the yard staff)

We've looked at both Southsea and Chichester Marinas, having disregarded Northney as looking half finished and are inclined to Southsea unless its a foolish thing to do.

Two beers please, my friend is paying.

Sorry, havn't been able to get to everyone. Thanks for your comments - interestingly, there seem to be two views about Southsea, good and bad!. The general view seems to be that both the Gosport Marinas do suffer from wash to a greater ar lesser extent. As we will be spending quite a bit of time on board in the Marina, we have decided to stay at Hythe. Thanks again for the info.

To be absolutly honest it was initiated by cost!. We were at Opal Marine (Camper & Nicholson's) ordering our new Bavaria 36 when we discovered that (at this years tarriff), Haslar was nearly £1200 cheaper than Hythe for this 11.4 metre boat. That started us thinking...... However, at the end of the day we are not really bound by price. After the various comments on this thread, I'm sure we'll be staying in Hythe.
