Ramsgate £29.30 1 night- no assistance, no berthing plan, go where you like.

Nieupoort 56 Euros including WiFi and electric 2 nights. Assisted entry and taking lines, berth that fits the boat.

I was in Suffolk Yacht Harbour the other day and a chap from Dundee asked where he could over winter the boat in the Orwell area either afloat in a marina or ashore.

I said he might get lucky with a winter deal somewhere for around a £1k.

He said he pays £40 a year for his mooring.

I wished him luck finding a berth for 6 months for £20 and apologised for the pricing of things south of the border.

Of course we have all been to places that charge next to nothing, like the Polish harbours for about 28zl including wifi, though electricity was extra last year.

We stayed in Ramsgate a couple of weeks ago. There was plenty of room and good quality fingers. Electricity and showers included and the harbour cabin nearby. I think we paid about £25 for our 10 metres and although this is more than we pay in many places, it seemed reasonable in the context of prices we have encountered this year around the Channel.

I would just as soon not have help with my lines; they almost always seem to do the most unpredictable things with them which defy logic and I have once or twice had near misses with damaging my boat when the bow has been yanked in some weird direction.

Everywhere we went, almost, was going to have free wifi, always "later this year", including Ramsgate, Brighton and a few others. I got the feeling that I might get the same answer next year too.

Dover Marina, £11 per night, free wifi, good value diesel, free electricity and a violent drunk on the quayside arguing with the port police at 2am.

Free wifi is largely irrelevant these days with all you can eat data plans and phones as hotspots, but it was nice to have it in. Guernsey where data roaming would have cost £1m a day.

What we resented were marinas with ad-ons. Poole Quay was £15 a night but harbour dues and electricity took that to £23. That's irritating. But when Bertha swung through and we had twenty five knot gusts and needed to spin The Kipper round in order to leave we had a team of three staff come down and they just warped us round, brilliant service, all done with a friendly smile.

Best value of all was Studland Bay, free mooring, free water at the shack, free leccy from the solar panels and a swim ashore twice a day.

The OP is looking forward to some free parking in the Netherlands. He likes the word 'free'.
I guess the Dutch food will taste good too after wot he has been scoffing of late
