Friday. Coming home from the west country and hit the dreaded fog just past the Looe channel. Grope along using radar and GPS until close to Brighton Marina. Listen out for the foghorn say’s I, having first checked with the marina control that it’s working. Couldn’t hear a bloody thing until we could see the people fishing off the wall.
Swimbo who’s not at her best after a couple of hours groping around, strikes off to the marina office bright and early next morning to give them a bit of enlightenment. Sorry they replied, we know it not very loud we’ve just had a complaint from the lifeboat crew on the same subject but the residents in the flats complain about the noise it makes. It’s their favourite whinge after the noise of the seagulls and the fishermen’s boats starting up early in the morning. Oh and don’t forget the seagull poo on the roofs which it appears, the residents also feel is the responsibility of the marina staff.
Could somebody just remind me which came first. The marina or the housing estate? and out of interest what are the responsibilities regarding harbours/marinas and charted navigation signals and who polices them?
For the record, if somebody in the Premier organisation reads this I’m not having a go at the staff. They as usual were courteous and helpful but as usual they have their hands tied by the apparent management policy of appeasing the residents over the berth holders and as it now seems, the safety of the coastal shipping, Just for once couldn’t one of you up there in the god’s sit up, find a bit of backbone and tell the balcony queens in their noddy hutch’s to go and ………….. .
It’s all very well you keep telling us in the magazines how you are improving the marina but it’s no bloody use if the boats can’t find their way into an entrance that is already restricted by over 2/3 of it’s width due to silting that was supposed to have been removed nearly a year ago.
