Or maybe people who work in the water industry see water sucked back when there are burst water mains (due presumably to the Bernouille effect) and thus take precautions to minimise the chance of sucking back contaminated water.

Taxpayers? It is the businesses that have to pay for taking these precautions on their own premises.
 
We have our own on board, a solid affair, cheap and cheerful from a DIY store.

Very glad of it when we got to Oban Marina and found one of the biggest dog turds it has my displeasure to encounter, on the marina hose. Informed the Marina, but it was still there when we came back a couple of hours later, but gone the next day.

If it's on a reel I 'll use the marina's hose, if not ours comes out of the locker.
 
There are no hoses in Med Marinas.

You get to live with it and part of the fun is seeing new arrivals jumping up and down with rage trying to get their connections to fit whilst being sprayed with high pressure water.

We have a box of about 20 different connections. Mostly stolen.

We also have keys to a similar number of shower blocks. Not stolen but duplicated.

Oh, and we never travel without several sink plugs.
 
Remember, most hoses other than the proper blue or white ones have toxic organo-mettalic plasticisers in the plastic. Probably not a problem if the water isn't in the hose for long, but do bear it in mind.
 
Get a flat hose on a reel

I encountered this problem on my trip from Scotland to the Charente this summer. The solution was to buy a 20m flat hose on a reel and an assortment of fittings; hoselock, screw cap and, most importantly, an in-line tap to fit on the bayonet connecter beloved by many French mariners (otherwise you get a full-on 6 bar up the hose before you are ready and it don't half thrash about!) had no problems since.
 
One time in Gun Wharf we used their hose in Jan/ Feb after it had been frozen for a few days. The gunge that came out of it was surprising. The water was mod green.

Not really the fault of the marina but surprising how quickly green stuff accumulates in hoses and how hard it is to get rid of.

Needles to say we didn't fill our tanks.
