Having real problems sorting out plans for this Autumn and next year. It's a nightmare!
Has anyone had experiance of this Marina for a winter layover. Prices seem reasonable and it's location makes it drivable from uk with dogs, and wife, and daughter, and daughter's latest squeeze and a suspension busting load of stuff which will never get eaten/ worn / used. Help!

I think forumite Metabarca lives around there, possibly keeps the boat at Hannibal, maybe PM him

Off Topic: I think I saved the "english" language version of the local restaurant menu which was posted some time ago, it was very funny

I used cheaper Nautec just up the Timavo river nearby. There's also Lepanto there too. But Hannibal is fine too w good restaurant, altho Nautec score well there also.
I used to drive to Monfalcone every spring, Brighton/Dieppe, Strasbourg, Salzburg and then turn south over the Italian Alps towards Trieste.
Very nearby FVG airport is convenient too. I think it's a great base, as do lots of Austrian yotties.

I keep my boat in the area (Aprilia Marittima, Latisana) and have friends who have wintered there. All speak highly of it, although the air can be contaminated with dust from the local shipyards, I believe.

Besides Metabaca who lives nearby, Deleted User of this parish has regularly wintered there and can inform better than most.

Hi have you got any contact details for Nautec and Lepanto?
Thanks
Jon

I suggest you send a PM to Metabarca - he kept his boat in Nautech when first he arrived in the area, though it's now in Trieste - my details are in the computer @ home.
Only Karl @ Nautech speaks English.
A very reasonably priced and highly competent yard and, if you can stand O'Leary's airline, regular flights to UK from the airport a €5 taxi ride away.
Monfalcone was an interesting town and the Co-Op there was one of the best supermarkets I've ever come across - makes Tesco Extra and Sainsbury's in UK look pathetic in both price and stock

Once again thanks for the info Charles

I have overwintered at Hannibal for the past 3 years from my summer base in Croatia and have had a considerable amount of maintenance work competently and efficiently carried out by them. Most of the office staff speak passable English although sometimes its a bit of a struggle with the service manager, Marco. There are 2 restaurants on site although only one is open most evenings (the self service restaurant doesn't look much but the food is excellent and cheap). It seems very secure as the marina is fenced off and there is a security guard on the gate at night. The marina is about 15mins from Friuli-Venezia-Giulia airport (Trieste in Ryanairspeak) which has regular flights from Stansted and both Venice Marco Polo and Venice Treviso airports are about 1hr drive away
Downsides are these. Monfalcone is an industrial town and its not the most attractive place to berth although both Venice and Trieste are 1 - 1 1/2hrs drive away. It can be very cold in winter, especially when the bora wind blows in and a few of the berths are somewhat exposed to the bora. Despite these things, I would happily go back again this winter.
Let me know if you are interested and I will give you some contacts there

Spot on, we spent 2 years there. Just to add a comment, Spring, Summer and Autumn can be horrendous for mozzies.

Trieste's actually 20 minutes away by car, 25 by train. If you have a car, lots of eateries in the Carso. In Monfalcone itself, La Vigna and La Fortuna are not bad. Good supermarkets too in Monfalcone (Best is the Coop towards the east end of town, or Emisfero towards Ronchi).

That depends whether you get lost trying to leave Monfalcone and then you can't find anywhere to park in Trieste:) I have to say that Trieste is a very attractive city and worth visiting although the Bora wind can blow there too!

And that is an off-shore wind! By the time the effect has reached across the top of the Adriatic to where I sail it is quite impressive. Especially as it can arrive almost instantly without warning - other than the frequent "may occur" when it often doesn't.

At 1.40, the fetch is approximately 200 metres! I was at my club that day and was lifted off my feet by the wind. It's especially fun when it rains at 1 or 2°C and then the wind blows and the temperature drops...Luckily, we don't get the strongest bora here...

IMHO the Monfalcone Co-0p was the best supermarket I've come across in the Central and Eastern Med.

Yes, it's where we go regularly for our staples, except veg which we buy from local contadini in Slovenia. And because it's a cooperative, you can be sure there are no nasties in what you're eating (I know one of thousands of board members, and he tells me the testing is incredibly strict, right down the line).
