Everyone on this BB seems to complain about the cost of berths in the UK but a mate on a 47ft boat got screwed for 100 eu per night last week.Where? Lagos, Portugal. Needless to say one night was enough before they left and went down to Cadiz but I thought that made the Hamble seem cheap!

Well, it all depends of what kind of services were included in the charge! I must say that an avarage time to spend in a marina in Holland for this amount would be a week.

It is a waste of time and it annoys the pig.

I've heard of £100 per night for a 40ft boat in some of the French and Italian Med marinas. Seems that they charge much more than ours do when demand is high and less when it is low.

To my mind, the really high charges in the UK arent in the South coast but in some of the half empty marinas on the West and East coasts. Take Watchet in the Bristol channel as an example. £20 for a night for a 30ft boat in a marina thats half built and in a town thats hardly desireable. Ought to be more like £10

I think the western marina's make their business directly from the solent.

Lets build a marina

what shall we charge visitors

well the sath coast charge £50.00 per night

yeaaas, we will make a fortune

why don't we get any visitors

Stay on wall at Barmouth or Porthmadog, £6.00 per night, full facilities in sailing clubs 30 secs walk from wall. Stay on pontoon at Peeeeeeweeeeeeelllllllleeeeeee £squillions, ugly town, miles from anywhere. Aberystwith is the same. Marinas should not be charging B&B charges, for gods sake I bring my own bed, food etc. £10.00 per night seems reasonable.

That is of course not true when you include water, electricity & shower + all other things you need to pay extra for.

We spent one (1) night in Brouwershaven this summer (won't be doing that again in a hurry) and 1.30 Euro of electricity lasted us just under two hours. Must admit we were running the fridge & the kids were using the laptop, but still...
In Wemeldinge showers & water were extra, same in Veere... the list goes on.

IMHO, when you take a berth somewhere, showers, electricity & water should be uncluded. It's like hotel rooms, wether you have one shower or twenty, leave all the lights on or only one, etc... the price for the night is the same.

The popular places in Northern France (Cherbourg and St Vaast for example) are only cheap if you don't wash!
They don't look so cheap when you add in the cost of showers for a crew of 6 or 7.

Yes, but in France you are expected to spread the cost of a shower over a week. When in Rome and all that! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Yup 2E per shower ..soon adds up, but the electricity is free so if you've got a shower on the boat its OK. Therefore bigger boats berthing can end up cheaper than smaller ones in Cherbourg.
