I was talking to someone a week or so ago who said that this yard has changed its policy regarding boat owners working and living aboard whilst on the hard .
Does anyone have any further information on this?

Yes. I visited them a few weeks ago and spoke to a company director. The decision was forced upon them by H&S, who are apparently very powerful in Greece.

The main points were:
No owner may apply antifouling, but the yard will apply it FOC.
Owners cannot live aboard in the yard
Owners may do any work other than painting for themselves.

Apparently, from another source, this follows the actions of one or more owners in spraying some unpleasant paint in the open air. Another owner complained, H&S visited in force and categorised the yard as an industrial site. Hence the restrictions.

Ah, that would seem to be more likely to be the case, and quite rightly so,paint spraying is a real P.I.T.A.if you are nearby.

The story I heard was that all DIY work was to be banned ,but rumours as always get out of hand.

What is the reason for stopping living aboard though ,is it because the yard is now classed as an industrial site?

We met a guy who'd been there for many years. As well as what's already been mentioned he was unhappy because they no longer offered some free days in Lakki marina before & after being lifted at Partheni.

My understanding is that the yard has always been an industrial zone, and there are suggestions that the heavy health and safety inspections have been encouraged by their 'competitors', as has been the blocking of the construction of a new pontoon in the marina.
More than cutting free days in the marina before lift and after launching, they have revoked existing contracts, which covered a stay in the marina or the boatyard, so that contract holders can now only spend ten days in the marina. The contract inquiry forms handed out in the marina still specify that the contract covers both the yard and the marina. And the discounted rates offered in local hotels are still about double what you would pay for an apartment (and given the state of trade probably rather less discount than you could negotiate yourself). And they have substantially increased their fees, so the antifouling is hardly FOC! And they have cut pay by a third and extended working hours so the best staff are leaving. The crane driver walked out the day we were to launch. Fortunately they managed to get an experienced crane driver to come in and train a new driver. But it is a bit unnerving seeing your boat being manouvered by a trainee who has never done it before.
Hence the mass exodus to Evros in Lakki, which is filling up fast.

...and if ever there was a more money grabbing yard its Evros....the staff at partheni are lovely but some fear for their jobs as the new partner is bringing in his rellys...his son Alex at 28 is the new "managing director".Yiorgi, the crane driver was our friend and we are still on Leros as many of our friends have been caught up in all the unsettlingness of swapping yards....Evros only has only 6 or 8 toilets with showers included in the same cubicle which are for men and women both.....the yard at partheni has 2 girls toilets and 2 mens,3 mens showers and 2 girls showers so that aint much difference...Evros marina/yard is building big new facilities to be ready?????????????????????????????been under construction for ages.
Partheni is gorgeous and quiet and 2 mins from aero we wintered there on board 2010-2011,would doooo it again but we live aboard so now ..no can do........
Don't know when the not being allowed to sleep on board starts though as Irene told me that on 14/05 when we arrived and we stayed till launched by Yiorgi...... everyone was still living on board when I visited on 12/06!
The Evros yard sure has made a mint out of this,I would say at least 30 boats have defected if not more.....Nicos their young "director " is also a nasty piece of work....in my opinion ..that is...Lakki marina is empty there are only 19 boats there as I write(and a fair few of them are doing their 10 free days) and Evros is jammed to the gills. We are all sad that it came to this...does Greece do H and S?

What a rambling, confused post.

Money grabbing - a recent survey found this to be the cheapest marina in the eastern Mediterranean. Half the price of most other Greek ones and generally well under Turkish rates.

Evros new toilets are tiled, floored and awaiting plumbing fixtures, which are imminent.

The migration from Partheni, and from Turkey, was not of Evros' making. Naturally they have benefited from it.

Evros is certainly well filled but nobody has been turned away as far as I know. We are in and out fairly often and always finish up in a berth. Plenty of space on the breakwater now, at least 20 places that I can see.

Nikos and his mother are perfectly OK, don't know what they have done to upset you.

ramble on and on and on

...and I can and I can confoose for England well spotted Mr Straightshooter....coming over to give the shower block, nearing completion the once over as have chums about to join you over there....or have you moved on for fear of seeing me with no clothes on again!
We are going over to Kamara at some junc to see if we can locate Yiorgi the crane driver as we had always promised him a drink and of course to get some first hand knowledge of what is going on up there....the rumours continue to do the rounds....anything from power cruisers only required...to building a new marina in Partheni bay!!!...also the anti foul thing is supposed to be that someone got the stuff in their eye, nothing to do with paint spraying,we have only ever seen the yardies spraying....and they get it all over the place, also they dry sand anti fouling(obv I am being fed some bits here)
So far we all did our own,did see Angelo shaking his head mind.
Another rumour given to moi by an English girl is that the live aboard bit has been rescinded!!!!!!

Now I am confused...... Vyv, we were hoping to move over to Leros in September or next June. I take it that Evros is the Marina we should go to and not the other one? I have rather abandoned sailing this year as my mother died and sorting everything out is the priority!

How are they for space at the moment with people moving from Turkey and the other marina?

Enjoy the rest of the summer - we haven't had a summer here - still have fires every night!

Hi Chris, sorry to hear of your setbacks. Yes, Evros is the name by which Leros Marina is known, to differentiate it from Lakki Marina opposite. Evros is fully protected by a large breakwater, whereas Lakki is quite exposed to some wind directions and untenable on occasion. Lakki and the yard at Partheni were together (partners, same owner, don't know?) but that seems to be no longer the case. Boat handling ashore at both yards is excellent.

Evros can do repairs and have storage for a large number of boats ashore as well as afloat. They are building up this side of the business and have recently bought a lot of new equipment. As far as I know they are still signing boats up although it is undoubtedly becoming more full all the time. I counted more than 20 empty berths yesterday and the yard is nearly empty, so many must be out sailing.

Weather here has been unusual. The meltemi, that is supposed to start towards the end of July, has been blowing on and off for several weeks. 25 knots at present, and baking hot.

Hope you get out here before too long

Vyv

Thanks Vyv
One more query. Do they use a trailer lift for moving boats, or is it all done by lifts with slings. I am happy with Aktios trailer lift with its truly massive pads, but anything of the Messolonghi type cannot be used (damaged once - I doubt if the insurers would pay for more damage by under lifters!)

Hope the wind calms down

I made the point about boat handling with your problem in mind. Both yards use lifts with slings. No tractor involved, so boats are well spaced when stored. I have seen a tractor recently at Evros but it seems to be specifically for catamarans. Evros are extremely careful and professional, which I understand can also be said for Partheni.

We had our boat on the hard at Evros last winter to redo antifouling etc and would second Vyv comments. Very professional and competent. The best cradle supports we have ever had, which is reassuring when leaving the boat. Very helpful staff getting power and water etc.
From what I saw of Agmar I think they were equally good.

Just one or two general things to add about Leros island and the boatyards.
We think it's one of the nicest Greek islands - it's not barren and it is made up of a series of hills, with the valleys in between dotted with smallholdings, fields and olive groves. Very pleasant for walking and cycling.

Lakki town is unusual with its Italian history. Some friends of ours hated it, but we like the spacious streets and even after 4 years being based there we still discover new shops and businesses we hadn't previously noticed.
The island has three chandleries *- Partheni boatyard, Lakki town and Evros Marina/boatyard - that's quite a choice for a Greek island.
There is a good choice of supermarkets and other shops for provisions including a fantastic greengrocer, plus several hardware stores and an electrical shop.
If you want a great range of bars, restaurants and nightclubs this is not the place for you.

Transport to and from the island is good in my view. There are ferries to Athens, Kos and Rhodes, fast catamarans to Kos and Rhodes, plus various other ways of getting to the other Dodecanese islands. There is also the airport which has? daily flights to Athens but these seem to be under constant threat of cutting.

Partheni boatyard is large, in an unspoilt isolated area of the island just next to the airport. It's probably more peaceful than Lakki town. Evros is just on the edge of Lakki town so is convenient for provisioning and for the ferries to Athens/Rhodes. We will be keeping our boat at Evros this coming winter for the fourth year and we have seen many changes since we first arrived including a new travel lift for yachts. The old one broke down with our boat in it! All boatyards and businesses have changes of staff and there have been changes at Evros as well as at Partheni.

Finally it's a good base - you can cruise the Dodecanese, the Aegean or go across to Turkey.

Thanks for your very useful update. We are looking for a change of scene from the Ionian - I always think that once you no longer need a chart to get around, its time to move on!

We tend to use the boat for 2 to 3 months a year May/June, and Sept Oct. My other half is not quite so keen on being longer than 3 to 4 weeks on board at any time! So if the area is a really good cruising ground like the Ionian (all be it, with rather more wind (this year) then that is good news.

it would seem sensible to dry sail the boat, or is it safe enough to leave her afloat unattended for july and august?

Chris
July & August are quite safe in Leros (Evros) Marina. They have extended their breakwater and Laki itself is one of best natural harbours in the Med. We actually left our boat in the water over last winter with no problems.

We also moved over from the Ionian last year and are enjoying the new cruising area. Winds are certainly a little more challenging than the Ionian and getting there is more tricky but overall, glad we moved.

Thanks Steve - good to have these reassurances, good to encourage SWMBO!
