Just playing with my new Garmin. Looks ok considering the small scale chart supplied. The Bluechart 2g is quite impressive but again I only have the small scale version.
I want to be able to create waypoints on my PC charts and transfer them to the Garmin.
Apparently I need MapSource for this. I thought that MapSorce would be included in the package but there is no seperate disc. I then got the impression that the software was in the GPS and i just needed to transfer it to the PC via an SD card but this is not working nor explained in the handbook.
Can anyone help please.

I think you need garmin software called homeport to
do waypoints etc on pc. I think its a newer version of mapsource.
I'm sure someone will have the exact info soon but that's my understanding.

Im sorry you feel that way, but lets face it most chart data has been compiled one way or another from tax payers money, then you are ripped off by a private company trying to sell it back to you (the tax payer) on an electronic memory card that costs a couple of pounds for several hundred pounds.

Stevensuf,
The Hydrographic office recovered a large part of its costs from the sale of charts in the same way that the O.S recovered most of its map making costs ( and is now of course quite independant of the tax payer) Every chart we pirate is taking money from the taxpayer.

Not trying to adopt a high moral plane here as I have often used pirated material.
Must investigate this Navionics stuff as I need Med charts!!

the navionics on smart phones/. ipad / android tablets is soo cheap compared to similar charts on chips, making me guess that a very small fraction of the 300 pounds chip cost is the chart itself.

I use Map Source to transfer routes and waypoints onto any combination of my Garmin 76Cx. 276 and 555. All passage planning done on PC using Map Source. System works a treat.

MapSource is a free download from Garmin. I know it well!

Homeport is indeed a later program, but it ISN'T the same, and has rather different functionality.

Incidentally, you can prepare your own maps/charts for Garmin kit - see www.cgpsmapper.com. Be warned that it isn't exactly easy - I've had to do it for Antarctica. for which Garmin does not provide mapping.

IIRC, my Garmin GPSMap 76Cx came with a disc called Trip & Waypoint manager which included MapSource. I just used it yesterday to reinstall the driver for the handheld on my desktop computer. I may be completely wrong about that though, since it's been probably five years since I bought the unit, and a year and a half since I got my laptop. The Garmin download site states: WARNING: This software will not work unless you already own a MapSource product. Doesn't seem to work for you if you don't have MapSource already.

No, it means that you have to have a Garmin MAP product compatible with Mapsource. There are ways of installing it without a map (see Google, not me!), and once installed you can download the maps from your Garmin unit. Trip and Waypoint Manager is one such map product.
