Having seen the thread for Maplins 4.8w solar panels I decided to order one mail order . Arrived to-day smashed to bits good ol' DHL . /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
Go to the shop like rest of us .....and try not to drop it on the way home. Mine seems quite robust so DHL must have a problem ..hope you resolve the problem.
A quick phone call to Maplins and another one is winging its way as I type . DHL better look after this one . Go to the shop ?? Not likely is nearly 30miles away.
As its a cheap amorphous silicon one it wont do much charging until the sun shines brightly on it... DHL did you a favour. There's a reason why proper solar cells cost more than the ones from Maplin and that is they generate power on cloudy days as well.....
Only on a sunny day ??? Bollox ! Check it out herehttp://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=115194&doy=8m4#overview
If it like you say then Maplins fall foul of trade description. Can't believe they would be that stupid over such a cheap item . We shall have to wait and see.
Not sure it is quite as simple as that. Although amorphous silicon panels are generally less efficient than crystalline panels for a given size, they are more efficient in low light conditions. Anyway I bought one as it looks good value at the price and I'll find out if it keeps my batteries topped up.
Ours kept the battery topped up all winter without any problems, but we only had 1 x 85amp h to maintain so not sure how effective it would be for multiple batteries. The panel would not have had a huge amount of direct sunshine though the battery was fully charged before we left it.
[/ QUOTE ] Maplin actually recommend the 10w panel for a 70Ah battery although I don't see why it should be necessary, especially when they sell 1watt dash top panels for cars!
