Correct - no M1 / M2 channels

[/ QUOTE ]Does anyone still use them?

Yacht Clubs, Marinas ... to reduce calling on 16 etc. and to keep recognised intership channels free...

I think you will find all marinas have now switched to 80 and if you don't race in a YC series you are unlikely to have a need for M/M2, so their absence doesn't really seem to be a major issue for most people.

There is some confusion though - as just googling M1 M2 ... one site says M2 = Ch. 80, another says it's not.

But all confirm use of M1 M2 by yacht Clubs and marinas as well as 80 + 37

ie :

St Peter Port Radio provides emergency cover when required and maintains a 24-hours watch on VHF Channel 16........... Normal working frequencies of St Peter Port Radio is VHF Channel 20 (direct calling). The telephone number of St Peter Port Radio is 01481 720085. Port Control's working channel is VHF 12; ........ Berthing instructions will be given verbally by the Marina staff when meeting yachts on arrival. Channel M (37A) and Channel M2 (80) are manned during normal office hours Monday to Friday, call sign St Peter Port Marina.

then we have .. http://www.yachtcom.info/vhfchannels.htm

Originally M1 M2 were started to reduce traffic on general channels, but of course if UK boats are only one's with them assigned on their radio sets - it sort of defeats the good intention with foreign boats not so fitted. But Ch. 80 being Duplex IMHO will be less advantageous - you cannot hear the vessel side of conversation - if you are entering / leaving same marina / location.

IMHO - because it is used by some then it's worth having. It's like most channels on a VHF that you never use in fact ...
