Man Overboard Practice

you cant practice MOB enough..I would never wish anybody to have to experiance the real thing in confused seas and high wind or at any time..but believe me it aint like that in a real situation..high wind big sea and you find your crew are in a state of panic watching someone posible drowing..its very important for all to be able to keep a level head..as it might be the skipper going over..you know how nervouse people get when a bit of a blow comes up ..had a situation myself high wind and steep sea...it is not easy...and its not so easy to manouver a boat at close quaters with a body in the water and a 2mtr swell with 30kts of wind

Did it for real early autumn, although the MOB was from another boat. A capsized dinghy sailed off with the helm aboard, leaving the crew behind. She was a bit panicy from being left floating in the North Sea.

Unlike practice (or sailing onto a mooring) I was reluctant to come right up to her, for fear of running her down.

Conveniently, I'd just fitted a floating safety line so I could thow that to her, while still lying a few feet away.

It was a good reminder, and I've rerigged a couple of safety items since.
