I was told today that the esteemed and learned goverment, have decided to create yet another tax in the form of a Sea Angling licence with a proposed cost of £22.00 p.a. As I have not been near a confuser or T.V for a week I could not comment on the statement, has the forum heard anything to the same or is it all poppycock????

Re: A fishy story.

Thousands of Eels in our Marina!!! More so now as the silver backs have arrived ready to migrate out to the Sargasso sea to breed. Almost certain to catch one within 5 mins if you use a bit of bacon or steak fat on the hook!!!

According to the BBC report:-
"Plans to force sea anglers to buy a £22 annual sea fishing licence are being considered by the government.
Commercial fishing firms could also be made to pay up to £1,000 for the benefit of fishing in British waters.
In return the government would safeguard sea fish stocks and look after sea anglers' interests, it says. "

So does this mean that if we do not have the licence the governement will not safeguard the fish stocks as they have been doing until now? I mean they have done such a good job in protecting the fisheries in British waters over the years it would be a shame not to give them the £22 so that they can continue doing such a great job!!!!! I mean fish stocks are so high under their management, why not add to the world of dillusion by allowing them to charge us for it!!!

As for policing - well I guess that they will need the £22 just to pay for the £5 per gallon diesel that the new fishery monitoring boats will need to zip around our seas searching for any rods sticking out of any boats!!!!!

This is such a mad cap scheme being a mix of the unjust and unworkable with the wrong objectives that they will probably end up implementing it.

The part that strikes me as odd is the figure of £22 per licence - if its just an idea why not around £20 ... nope it an idea floated with a figure of £22.00 ????

Incredible!!!!!

Especially neat how this came from the 'Prime Minister's strategy unit'. Glad to see he's got them working on the vitally important stuff!

Oh - and this after a DEFRA comissioned report said that sea anglers spend about 538m a year, whilst fishing sustainably. So, errr, ripe for taxing then.

They would have to change a Queens law which allows you to fish first.

All bollox IMHO

"Does this mean I owe £44 for the kids' crab lines, then? Where do I send the money? "

Well are crabs fish? Certainly not! So you need not buy a new fishing licence as long as you register the lines with the new crabbing authority and pay the £23.86p proposed crabbing fishing licence exempt permit.

Crabbing authority boats will be different to the new fihing patrol boats in as much as they will be fitted with side thrusters but in 2011 the Chancellor will propose a major cost saving by merging the two authorities into one. At this point the crabbing fishery exempt permit will be merged with the fishing licence and a new combined charge of only £32.50 will apply for a crab& fish permit - this will offer a significant savings to those who did both crabbing and fishing. As regards the fisherman who do not crab well they will just have to crab and like it.

In 2012 the government will in any event ban all sea fishing and crabbing on the grounds that they are cruel to fish and crabs. But do not worry because the ban will be held back for 2 years until after the general election in 2013.

Re: A fishy story.

yeah, i saw couple of 'em when i was there. 1 of the fishermen caught nothing but them (he was moored at end of my pontoon)

Also (thread drift) saw bob norton in gloucester docks last week - he was *somewhat* squiffy /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Logical, all the fishermen pay there £22, Mr Blair sets up new committees for mates, they decide that to conserve stock fishing must be band, so fishermen put up there rods and go home. We then need more patrol boats to monitor the ban, and more committees to monitor trhe monitor's.

What happens if you have a trailing log?? what proof will you need that you did not have a hook on the end ??.

Magna Carter,

Ah Yes !! I think you are referring to the Magna Carter, which gives us a right to fish, collect bait etc, from the low water mark to the high water mark! I could well be wrong in which case I guess someone will correct me .

Re: Magna Carter,

Bait collecting .... you should never mention it because they probably know nothing about it...... you may need to apply for a tidal range farming licence if you mention it again!!

Re: Magna Carter,

I guess they will need to repeal the whole thing and bring in "Nannies Law" instead.
This crowd of jokers are going way OTT. I really think they have had enough and want out, it can be the only plausible explanation for the drivel theyr'e churning out, hoping not to get re-elected.

Re: proposal (high level)

been around a month or so Julian - the issue of Sea Angler on the stands currently has both letters and an editorial on it!
General comment seems to be that it's heavy on what we are expected to do (cough up dosh around 20/22 squid a year) and light on what they are going to do for it!
I don't have a problem in principle but cannot see them being able to do anything practical to support their side at all - look at the fiasco with the pair trawlers in the bass breeding grounds for example; they asked nicely if it could be stopped and were told by the EU to get stuffed and get back to sausage making........

Re: What about the Rod license

That is the river licence which you must have to fish in any inland waterway, it does not have anything to do with Sea Angling

It would be hilarious but somehow I've got the idea you've been looking into crystal balls and that it has more of the Yes Minister about it than I would like to believe.
