The annual sponsored rowing race for the benefit of the RNLI and organised by the MLSC is on Saturday 31 Dec 2016.
Start of racing is at 12:30.
Rowing dinghies, gigs and canoes take part, many crews in fancy dress. Entries are sponsored and there is a cash donation collection. Refreshments are available in the MLSC clubhouse.
The West Mersea lifeboat usually attends.

It's a fun event with a good cause benefiting. This year is the 40th anniversary race.
Please support this if you can.

Most of the time, the RNLI devotes its resources to warning people how dangerous the water is. And now they're sponsoring a rowing race in the middle of winter? When the water temperature can induce hypothermia in no time? Fundraising must be slow.

Hypothermia? Maldon? The mud race, when held in the winter, was more likely to lead to hypothermia then sweating and working hard rowing a boat. There are so many boats out in the river that I doubt a MOB would be in for more than a minute, and most of the route you could walk ashore in any case.

Cheer up, it's nearly Christmas!

It's been an annual event since the early 70's with no hypothermia, and it raises a hefty sum each time.

Well, there were 40 or more boats - rowing gigs, canoes, paddle boards, kayaks, good rowing boats, scruffy dinghies - all sorts. There were three or more ribs in attendance including the Mersea lifeboat and rescue boats from Blackwater and Maldon yacht clubs, and the Burnham LB crews were in one of the competing 8-oared boats (not very fast, they only just beat me!). The course was just to the end of the prom, back to Fullbridge finishing off the Hythe. I cannot see that there was any danger at all! This year, no one fell in, that I saw anyway, though last year someone had to be yanked out of the water. There were hundreds of spectators, and they raised a lot for the RNLI. We did it in kayaks (2nd and 3rd - very pleased).
It is a really good fun event, and really does not warrant the negativity above. Surely any event that gets people interested in boating should be encouraged by members of this forum!

And the event was being watched over by the Coastguard too! Glad you also had a great time.

Hi,
I was hoping that this thread would continue with a positive attitude towards the RNLI and it's supporters!
I would expect that anyone preferring to criticise the RNLI and associated activities would start their own thread.

I understand that the rowing races sponsorship money and other donations have raised over £7,000 for RNLI funds.

Whilst I hope that my support goes towards helping others I must confess to an element of self interest.

Thank-you to everyone who does support the work of the RNLI

Well said. I hope you get a reply of support for and commitment to the RNLI from every single reader of this forum. I know they are not the only operator of lifeboats around our coast but they are by far the largest and provide an outstanding service.

Well the RNLI will always have my support - you never know.........

+1 for the RNLI - The Marconi SC Gig Elettra was in the Gig race and there was another fancy dressed crew raising funds too. Thoroughly good show all round.

Ahoy !
It may be of interest that there are only two months of the year when the water temperature in the Blackwater could be deemed 'safe' !

Which months would those be? I have swum in the Blackwater in more than two months - the last time was in October.
Anyway, do you only think it's safe to go out in a boat when the water is safe to swim in?
