Making the saloon floor shiny - How?

Just cleaned the saloon floor and given it a polish with Mr. Sheen, but it's not come up as nice as I'd hoped.

Any suggestions, other than sanding and varnishing.

I've always found Mr Sheen suicidal, makes the floor slippy not helpful when sailing.

Mr. Sheen - definitely not slippy here... probably the opposite.

I use a wooden floor cleaner-sorry can't remember the brand but get it in most uk supermarkets. Capful in a bucket of warm water, mop/wipe the floor,leave to dry. Comes up clean and shiney and smells nice! Used it for a few years now and no ill effects. I have used it to wipe down other interior woodwork and pleased with the results.

depends on if it's dirt or scuffing.

The former a strong detergent, the latter buffing.

Mind shiny = slippery, not the best of things in a sea-going boat.

We've bypassed the problem by fitting polypropylene carpet. A £42 remnant was enough for doing the boat two and a half times. Bit of a fiddle to fit tho' if you haven't got an existing carpet as template.

I'm a great fan of Eezee-Orange Wood Cleaner and Polish for interior varnished finishes - very quick and easy to use , removes any dirt and leaves a very shiny finish and a slight citrus aroma. Have to admit that I haven't used it on my Holly&Teak though so I don't know whether it would create a slipping hazard in wet conditions. As far as I know you can only get it from a Kleenezee rep. [and I'm not one]. I recall that it's about £5 per bottle but a bottle lasts ages. We use it at home also.

Arrrr .... carpet template ....

Get hold of old wrapping paper, brown parcel / xmas whatever you have in any remnants etc.

Lay out paper on sole and then add bits at corners / odd shaped areas - using sellotape or paper glue to stick pieces together. Basically you patch together the shape. Once all in place and to correct - you double stick with tape / glue so that it stays together when lifted. You have also written on TOP ! so you know which way up it goes.
Now turn carpet over so underside to you ... paper template with TOP to the carpet ... draw round. Bingo.

Oh and to delay the onset of frayed edges ... paint PVA or Copydex glue round the edges and let dry.

Richard, i use astonish wood floor cleaner, first then use astonish non slip wood floor polish, and it really is non slip and leaves a nice shine on the teak holly and the rest of the wood intierier , regards...............£1 per bottle
