Making scarps etc

Rafted up to a fishing boat in San Lucar de Barrameda, while resting and waiting for the tide to go up to Sevilla.
They were repairing it and cutting scarphs with chainsaws.... Not quite the idea I was used to, carefully planing the faces for a close match..

You use whatever you have to do the job. I used to repair a lot of clinker boats, doing the scarphs is always fun particularly the forward one on a plank replacement, Cos the scarph should always trail aft towards the outside, so if you are cutting a new scarph a degree of tight work is needed on the inside of the boat, chisels used with the bevel downwards or even on one boat i took an old chisel & reforged it with a short flat blade & handle set high at an angle, great for getting in tight spaces.
An angle grinder with sanding disc or B&D powerfile are handy too!
