i am thinking of rejuvenating an old main with a baggy bottom by unstiching lower panel , cuttting some material from seam n restiching. one problem i forsee is the luff rope n leeach line. any comments?

A test can be done by putting eyelets along the line of 'cut' and bringing the sail down to the boom ....... effectively removing the 'bagginess'. I have exactly the same problem with my Latvian boat ....... extremely baggy foot, needing the mid section pulled down to match the unstretched tack and clew. I have a boltrope to fit the boom groove and that will be kept with the eyelets used. If its no good ..... all you've done is put a line of 'holes' that actually give you sail shape control.

Oh by the way ..... make sure you cut panels to double the sail in the area you fit them, sewing them to the sail as re-inforcing. Round patches about 3x the area of the eyelet is good enough. Small brass / bronze eyelets, stainless steel if you want to be smart !! 6mm lacings permanently fitted through with fig.8 notes eiether side to stop them falling out etc. If the main is permanent on boom ..... then lace it via the eye's to the boom with 4mm line running the whole foot of the sail.

It's an idea anyway and doesn't touch the leech, luff etc.
