Mainsail Reefing

Has anyone out there ever converted a Carter 30 Mainsail roller reefing system to a slab reefing or single line reefing system and or brought all the control lines aft? Any advice much appreciated.

Re: Mainsail Reefing

Is the existing arrangement to wind the sail around the boom, with a not very appealling trip to the mast to reach the winding handle?

Mine is like this, on an Achilles 9M, and I have had big plans to replace the handle with a drum, with a line going back to the cockpit.

Haven't done it yet....

Re: Mainsail Reefing

do a search on reefing and slab or Lazyjack in particular and you will find descriptions of various lazyjack systems that can be home completed / fitted without too much hassle and you still have old system if you need it ....

A drum at the goose-neck .... ?? I know it wouldn't work on my boat even if I took the slugs out etc.- as the luff is out of line with where the luff has to roll arouind boom ...... like most roller reef booms .... where you have to feed the sail onto the boom to stop it covering the roller mecahnism and handle ....

My handle is at the front of the mast, and I have a bolt rope with feeder, so no problem with fouling, as drum would be on other side of mast. I reckon the drum would need to be a fair size, as there may be a fair amount of torque applied when reefed, as well as reefing during a blow.

OK - same as my roller ....

I would assume a real load would have to be applied to get it to reef ...... witness when you are using the handle .... its quite an effort sometimes.

You are lucky actually having the feeder and on bolt-rope .... previous owner altered mine to slugs and a heath robinson sytstem of slabs ....
