mainsail doesn’t go into boom rail

ALL mainsails can be rolled if the boom has the facility ... but its an old system and very few people use roller boom now.

I must be one of the few that actually like roller boom !! and have perfected a way to keep boom UP and level when sail rolled.
Our F27 tri had roller boom reefing, it was very good. Brutally simple, strong and effective.

Presumably you have a tapered boom and a claw ring for the vang .
I solved the problem by rolling a length of webbing along the boom in the sail then fixing the kicking strap to that

No and No.

Standard boom.

Standard kicking strap shackled to underside of boom.

Because the kicking strap is for helping control the boom mostly when wind is abaft the beam - to control its jolting up / down ... I can easily dispense with it when reefed.

1. Unclip kicking strap
2. Roll sail while controlling halyard after opening slug gate in mast
3. Stop when required tack on the luff is at boom level- tighten halyard
4. lift boom end and make fast the clew eye at boom end
5. use the reefing pendants along the boom to gather and hold the sail ...

It all sounds a palaver - but in fact is not once you get a routine / system set. really needs to be seen in action and then you can see its not the palaver it sounds.

If you wish to not use the roller boom - then you can do similar with reefing lines at luff and clew ... which I then added because I hate SLUGS !! and they need to be released for the roller boom.... in fact for any real reefing - but in practice - can be left in place if you dont mind the bottom of sail taking on a strange angle of tension !!

The use of the reefing pendants has been modified in my system to be sail gatherers rather than sail shape / main reef items.

The roller boom was standard with my boat when new but I soon realised the faff. I had probrems getting the leech out to keep the foot tight as it reefed. I needed the vang & i needed a mainsheet claw ring. The topping lift needed a rotating fitting which all added to the weight. Then one needed someone at the gooseneck to wind the handle to rotate the boom so reefing was a 2 handed job.
Getting a new sail & a rectangular boom with slab reefing was so good. A decent sail set every time. & the mainsheet & kicking strap always stayed set.
But I raced the boat almost every weekend as it was class racing with anything from 6-30 boats for the best part of 10 years

Mainsheet claw ? My boom has sheet at end .... and it connects to a fitting that rotates .. the opposite side of the fitting has the topping lift ... so rolling the boom is not a problem.

Its funny actually - as the previous owner attached topping lift to the clew outhaul fitting ... preventing the boom from rotating ... I soon changed to its correct place.
