Whilst attempting to check the tension on my main sail's leech line... the thing split in two. Most probably due to ageing and weathering.

Is the replacement a DIY job or a sailmaker's job ?

Any suggestions ?

Regards
Tyrone

I have done this myself (well my dad did it), on the waterfront at Waterford, which is right opposite a busy street of shops. My number 2 jib was spread out along the pavement with curious shoppers stepping round the sail. My dad was doing the job as he likes doing that sort of thing, and with his big white beard, blue smock and cap looked like Captain Birdseye, sufficient for visitors to take his picture as some sort of tourist attraction. Anyway, that's getting away from the point. We used a large safety and shoved it through like knicker elastic. It needs to be larger than would be used for knickers as the material is stiff. At one point the pin was too large to go through a seam, so it was unpicked and a few stiches replaced when it was done. It is quite slow and tiring on your fingers, but not difficult and you'll hardly damage the sail if you can't do it, so give it a go.
