i have bought a cable to conect my gps to laptop but the computer cant find it do i need a cd to instal or is there another way as i dont have the cd /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
Depends what you are trying to use the Magellan for. If you are wanting to download from Mapsend charts on the Laptop then you have to set the NMEA on the Magellan to off.
If, on the other hand, you are trying to send the positional data to an electronic Chart plotting package on the Laptop you will have to set NMEA to one of the version numbers on the Magellan (probably V2.1)

You will also have to check that the baud rate is identical on the computers comms port and the Magellan (mine defaulted to 4800 baud right from the start)

All of the above options are accessed from the Magellan's setup menu.
 
Serial to USB adaptors ...

They are notorious for trouble ..... Its normally best to stick to ONLY those that have driver discs as well ....

Many people have trouble with the basic Belkin - works with many things but GPS .... not so good.

Now the thing to do ... you have all switched on .... cable plugged in ... has the PC gone through its set-up of the USB device ??? If its XP - it should have done.
Now go to Device manager .... easiest way is to right click on My Computer and select device manager .... once the devices are listed .......... you scroll down to Ports .... you should see amongst this lot .... a listing for a USB device etc. .... giving the com port number ...

Now that you have that .... you open your softeware and set the GPS in to the same com port number.
While in there - make sure that software is set to generic NMEA .....

Now look at GPS .... find the menu and set-up .... go to the data out / protocol section and select NMEA out.

Now deependent on the software .... you may have to tell it to accept the GPS position data ... and most software will also have a NMEA sentence display in / out that you can check ....

Finally - its worth going to Magellan site and downloading the manual for the GPS .... they are there ... just need finding under Support .....
 
As has already been said, the usb to serial converters that are supplied without driver discs are notorious for not working with GPS. If you price the serial interconnect for the handheld, and the usb converter cable, it would have been a lot cheaper (and much easier) to have purchased a USB/GPS/Mouse from Ebay. Then you would have had a dedicated GPS for the laptop, plus the spare handheld, plus money in hand!
 
I bought magellan 310 as it was new. It doesnt had cd for PC. Are you sure that your map (or program) in pc support GPS.

If it does , then check your gps settings as said in earlier answers.
 
Run Autoroute (mine is Autoroute 2004)
Connect GPS to the Serial Port and switch it on. Make sure that it is showing a position.

On Autoroute -
Select :
Tools
GPS
Configure GPS Receiver
It will show a list of 1 or more Comms ports select 1 of them

Select:
Tools
GPS
Track Position

Your position should be shown on the Autoroute map.
If it doesn't work and you were shown more than 1 comms port then try selecting another 1 and see if that works
 
The only other thing that I can think of without actually seeing your set up is, and I know this sounds simplistic - GPS's don't usually work very well indoors. Can you try it outside, or at least get the GPS as near to a window as possible? Also, does the GPS show a position on it's screen when operated alone?
 
Think the first thing is to verify that GPS is actually working .....

If you haven't got GPS working - its no good expecting PC to show anything !!!
