Mad idiots on Southhampton water

"I can sometimes see an argument for compulsory licencing with comments like yours."

I am all for compulsory licencing, it would get a load of sail boats off the solent..

I bet you it would get rid of more mobos than raggies.

Only the ones that give MOBO's a bad name...

And those that say "B**ocks" to everyone else and want to interpret the ColRegs to suit themselves /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I am not sure if your aggressive style of posts has been meant in good humor or not but I cant help but feel you have managed to damage the fragile relationship between raggies and stinkers.

I always try very hard to be considerate around all other users but you have interpreted all posts in a very negative way.

If MOBOs from around you cut you up I am not surprised.

In future why dont you try a different approach and speak to fellow boaters on the pontoons, find a common interest and nurture a feeling of companionship.

I will still continue to be considerate (despite some of my play-full posts) for one reason only

At 25 knots 100 m away all Yachts look the same and I dont want to cut up any of my Friends who share our marina.
If there were not friendly Yachtsmen around such as Fireball why should I bother what the rest of you think of me ?

If you try to speak to the stinkers you may get a pleasant surprise

The Commodore of our Motor Boat club also owns a 40 ft Yacht.

I have a great wealth of sailing experience with trophies and have both crewed and helmed this year as well as tutored in France, so we should be able to find some common ground !

here is a selection of my quotes as you appear to have missed them

"I would like to think I never cause anyone a problem with my wash"

"If you had ever been on my boat you would know just how much trouble and wasted diesel I use to avoid wash for all users "

"Thanks Fireball, and feel free to let me know if you ever see me causing a problem ( I really do want to know)"

"Last weekend in the Solent I tried to keep well clear of any Yachts but I found the Solent to be so crowded once I altered course for one boat another Yacht or fisherman stood up in a dinghy was there.
I completed much of the journey at 6 knots even in open waters "

I don't think quoting peoples opinions back to them is ""aggressive". You only have to look back through this thread to see "b**llocks" and a general tone of disregard from a number of mobos. My experience is that this manifests itself more amongst fast motorboats than any other group.

Why are you not surprised that mobos cut me up, do you see it as acceptable behaviour because I object to unreasonable behaviour?

You know very little about me, the boaters I know or the people that I mix with. I do mix with motorboaters as well as sailors, in fact I spent an evening only last week with the owners of a Fairline 43.

I genuinely cannot think of one occasion where I have actually been deliberately inconsiderate to another boater (apart from one racing yacht at Cowes week 3 years ago, but that's another story) but it seems to me that I am on the receiving end of inconsiderate behaviour on a regular basis these days and the only reason seems to be that I dare to sail in an area where there are an increasing number of big fast motorboats

Why do you want to only be considerate to your "Friends who share our marina", are not all boaters worthy of the same consideration?

Come off it "you have managed to damage the fragile relationship between raggies and stinkers" get real. Your attitudes have been challenged on an internet forum - in the grand scheme of things none of this matters one jot.

With your wealth of experience I find your attitude and knowledge a bit disappointing and not actually typical of the mobos I do know. Having spent so much time in sailing boats, I find it surprising that you have to keep asking raggies for information on how they are affected by motorboats.

As for your quotes, my favourite is still:

"As mobos dont zig or zag it would be prudent for yachts to zig and zag away first because they know exactly where the mobo is going"

I think 'some' raggies have an unrealistic dream of calm water and a brisk F4 with no one but themselves on the water. When this dream is shattered by others who have the audacity to use the same area of water they come up with a load of bollox about others being inconsiderate.

In the real world the only complaint should be on the grounds of collision, not because someone upset 'your' water.

You wouldn't go out in a rough chop and expect your tea and biscuits to stay on the tray so why expect the same in the Solent where there are a lot of boats competing for the same bit of water. You know what to expect?

Yes, almost all boat owners, sail and power show respect to their fellow water users but it's not a requirement so don't get upset when it doesn't happen.

" Yes, almost all boat owners, sail and power show respect to their fellow water users but it's not a requirement so don't get upset when it doesn't happen. "

Why is it not a requirement? Do you mean that it isn't a legal requirement or that it isn't a requirement of civilised behaviour?

Show me where it's a requirement in either, which is my point. It's not.

Similar to those who drive right up to the cones in roadworks, nothing wrong in doing it but it pi$$es of those who are queing nicely.

Do you think that the obsession with having large powerful machines and always having to push to the front might indicate a certain deficiency in more personal areas?

That theory was certainly always applied to cars.

(I haven't paid more than £400 for a car or had one over 1400cc in the last 20 years and I've only got 8hp in my boat /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

are you suggesting that you shouldn't drive up to the cones and merge 1:1?

that's why the cones are there and not 200 yds earlier!

No, just the opposite. I said "nothing wrong in doing it but it pi$$es of those who are queing nicely."
