Macwester photos and links sought

niceynicey: Thanks very much for sending through your photos. I've uploaded them and they can be seen in the Macwester 26 section : )

Salty John: Thanks very much too. That's a great photo - its the first that's been submitted from a time when Macwesters were still in production. Fantastic!

Both can be accessed through the following link:

Thanks to everyone posting on this link-
but I am a bit confused about the Macwester 28.

I've read here, and seen photos, of the boat- but on the owner's association site it mentions an aft cabin Macwester 28, the first of the "Wight" class, yet I find no mention of the 28' Wight here.

Other than her displacement and [advantageous, from my view] shoal draft from the MOA site, I know nothing more about the 28' Wight- and again, unless I've missed something, I find it nowhere referred to in this forum. I've been searching "Macwesters for sale" on the net for over a year now, and in that search too, turned up not a single 28' Wight mention.

I don't even know if she were sloop or ketch rigged. They seem to have disappeared from mention and memory- yet apparently a number of them were built.

Can anyone clear up my confusion?
Thanks.

[as an aside to TamarMike: apparently you agree- there is no better mate than a good sea dog, or two].

EDIT:
I just read the comments to this link, which I should have read before posting- apologies, please:

Should anyone discover photos, links, information- or particularly, a 28' Wight for sale- please let me know. Thanks

4Henry: Unfortunately I'm not in a position to help/add much. You most likely already spotted the black & white line drawing of Macwester 28 Wight (aft cabin) on the Macwester Owners Association website (see here) - but that's as close as I have come to seeing one.

Google currently only throws up two results when you seach for "macwester 28 wight". However, the existence of the illustration on the Macwester Owners Association website does provide some circumstantial evidence that some 28 Wights are out there somewhere.

Good luck with your search; and please let us know if you find one.

Atlanta then developed the 8.5 from the 28 with fuller quarters giving more buoyancy at the stern and a slightly longer waterline, also the coachroof was extended further aft creating a larger saloon but with rather a lot of engine in the companionway area.

The engine cover top on my 8.5 is 670 long x 690 wide. I was not so sure about the invasion into the main cabin at first when buying, but after almost two years now, I have come to consider it an asset!

Great all round access to engine, gearbox and sterngland - important when your dealing with 30year old gear. Great for single handers too -charts, pilots, sandwiches, and wet gear live there when sailing - all within easy reach from the cockpit.

Still trying to find the hull number on my boat - was wondering if location would be same as the A28?

yodave - you interested in including pics of the Altanta (viking) 8.5? The Atlantas usually get a mentioned along with the macwesters.

Hi YoDave:

Thanks for your message.

Yes, the line drawing you mention and their attendent specs are just about all I have come by as well- and also in the link enclosed above, a seeminly knowledgeable reference to the 28' Wight is found in the Comments section.

so just as you say, apparently the 28' Wight does [did] exist, but seems to have disappeared from memory to the extent that in all discussion of the 28' Macwester, the 28' Wight is seldom if ever mentioned.

Having pursued all sorts of Macwester leads on the net for a year now in hopes of finding an example of the "original" Wight: after all this time looking, and if even you and the members of this forum do not have any further information, then alas, I fear my own continued search does not offer much hope of any real success.

However, I will indeed keep you posted if anything turns up.
And thanks again for all the responses on this thread.

For my sailing grounds, the more shoal the draft, the better. The 28' Wight's combination of relatively small size [compared to the later Wights], shoal draft, aft cabin and stout design seems a worthy compromise of criteria- that is, if such a boat ever really existed!

Yes please, I don't have any photos of the Macwester 28 yet, but I plan to include Atlanta 28s in that section.

Mark-1: Thanks for your kind offer ...which I'd like to take up. I'll include some of these in the Rowan section shortly.

Thanks! : )
